The reviewed Phase 8 guides recommend Soulcrusher gear in several slots, but retain some older options—including the Naxxramas Cryptfiend Silk Cloak. Treat the lists as phase-specific targets, then choose between more survival and more threat for the fight at hand.
What Phase 8 tank shaman BiS means
“Best in slot” is a recommendation for a particular phase and use case, not one permanent set that is optimal against every boss. The Phase 8 guides reviewed here focus on Scarlet Enclave content and unfamiliar loot, and both include gear from outside that raid. Wowhead’s page is labeled Patch 1.15.8 and displays an update date of April 30, 2025; Icy Veins displays an update date of April 8, 2025. Verify current item balance, availability, and drops in game before treating either list as definitive: Wowhead notes that Blizzard may adjust item and set-bonus balance, and that its recommendations may change. Wowhead Phase 8 tank BiS; Icy Veins Phase 8 tank gear.
Phase 8 gear targets by slot
Wowhead names these Soulcrusher pieces among its slot recommendations. Icy Veins independently lists four of them—Faceguard, Pauldrons, Chestguard, and Sabatons—in its Phase 8 table. The cloak is a useful example of why a Phase 8 list is not the same thing as a Scarlet Enclave-only loot list: Wowhead calls Cryptfiend Silk Cloak best across levels of play while marking it optional in the slot table, and Icy Veins identifies it as a Naxxramas cloak.
| Slot | Wowhead Phase 8 recommendation named in the guide | Icy Veins Phase 8 recommendation named in the guide |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Soulcrusher Faceguard | Soulcrusher Faceguard |
| Shoulders | Soulcrusher Pauldrons | Soulcrusher Pauldrons |
| Chest | Soulcrusher Chestguard | Soulcrusher Chestguard |
| Hands | Soulcrusher Mitts | Not stated in the cited Phase 8 table summary (Icy Veins) |
| Waist | Soulcrusher Cord | Not stated in the cited Phase 8 table summary (Icy Veins) |
| Legs | Soulcrusher Legplates | Not stated in the cited Phase 8 table summary (Icy Veins) |
| Feet | Soulcrusher Sabatons | Soulcrusher Sabatons |
| Back | Cryptfiend Silk Cloak, described as best across levels of play and optional in the slot table | Cryptfiend Silk Cloak, from Naxxramas |
The sources also retain older tier options in several Wowhead slots and other Naxxramas or Scarlet Enclave choices in Icy Veins. These are guide recommendations, not proof that every listed item is equally attainable or best for each encounter. Choose gear for survival or threat
Wowhead’s gearing advice distinguishes high-damage fights from lower-damage ones. For heavy incoming damage, prioritize armor and stamina, with resistance or agility where the encounter calls for it. When damage intake is lower, attack power—including Strength—can support threat. Wowhead recommends maintaining two sets when practical and swapping pieces to fit the fight rather than treating one list as universal. Wowhead’s tank gearing guidance.
Icy Veins gives this general tank stat ordering: Defense > Hit > Strength > Stamina > Agility > Attack Power > Dodge > Armor. That is the guide’s stated priority, not a universal formula. A broad stat order cannot replace checking whether a specific encounter’s damage profile makes more armor, stamina, or resistance more valuable. Icy Veins tank gear guide.

Compare alternatives before replacing a piece
- Survival: Match armor, stamina, and any relevant resistance to the damage you need to withstand.
- Threat and hit: Consider whether your current setup is meeting the encounter’s threat demands before trading away offensive stats.
- Set and slot interactions: Check whether changing a piece affects a set bonus or makes another slot choice more valuable.
- Source and access: Account for whether the alternative comes from a raid, dungeon, crafting, reputation, or PvP, and whether you can realistically obtain it.
- Temporary bridge or long-term target: A useful interim item does not need to be your final phase target, especially if it improves the next raid’s survival.
Older advice and official progression context
Caperfin’s January 7, 2024 community guide uses a more explicitly defensive-first framing: stamina, armor, dodge, agility, then Strength. Once survival is assured, its threat-oriented priority shifts to agility, intellect, hit, Strength, and attack power. It also gives period-specific examples such as Engineering’s Big Bronze Bomb and Target Dummy, and Leatherworking’s Void-Touched Leather Gloves. These are historical examples from an older guide, not replacements for the Phase 8 gear tables. Caperfin’s Season of Discovery shaman tank guide.
Blizzard’s Phase 4 announcement documents progression to level 60, new class runes, a cloak slot, utility runes and a ring slot, and raid content including Molten Core. That announcement provides progression context; it does not confirm the current Phase 8 tank shaman slot rankings or item recommendations. Blizzard’s Phase 4 announcement.
