In a 2019 GamesBeat interview marking Insomniac Games’ 25th anniversary, founder and then-CEO Ted Price traced the studio’s path from a nearly abandoned first game to Marvel’s Spider-Man. His account presents the hit not as the studio’s sole identity, but as one result of a longer pattern: changing direction when needed, learning across different kinds of games, and inviting candid feedback.
How Insomniac began—and how a change of platform helped it survive
Price said Insomniac’s official beginning came in February 1994, when incorporation papers were approved under the name Extreme Software. He started the company with brothers Al and Brian Hastings and pursued its first game, Disruptor.
The early project had a difficult start. Publishers rejected its demo, and the young company was close to running out of money. A meeting with Universal’s interactive division led to a deal. During development, the team also moved Disruptor from 3DO to PlayStation after advice from producer Mark Cerny and Universal. Price later summed up the mindset behind such a pivot: “We need to be comfortable with moving in different directions.”
Disruptor was not a major commercial success, but the Universal relationship helped open the way to Spyro the Dragon and the projects that followed. In Price’s telling, the studio’s start was less a straight climb than a series of adjustments that kept it moving.

Spider-Man was a milestone, not the whole story
By the 25-year mark, Insomniac’s catalog had ranged across franchises, genres, and formats. The 2019 interview highlighted Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Fuse, Sunset Overdrive, The Unspoken, Song of the Deep, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. That is a snapshot of the studio’s history as discussed in 2019, not a current release slate.
GamesBeat’s opening described Marvel’s Spider-Man as having sold more than 9 million copies since its fall 2018 debut. That was a figure reported in 2019, not a present-day sales total. The interview’s broader point is that Insomniac arrived at the game after years of working with different characters, worlds, mechanics, and genres. Spider-Man was a defining achievement, but the studio’s identity had been built through more than one franchise.

What Price said helped Insomniac endure
Price did not offer a single formula for longevity. He described practices that, in his view, helped the studio keep its work and processes responsive.
Seek feedback without treating it as a threat
Price said Insomniac looked for objective perspectives from partners, publishers, usability testers, and other observers. The difficult part, as he described it, was evaluating criticism without becoming emotionally defensive. Feedback mattered when it exposed a problem the team could address, not simply because it came from outside.

Let the work change when evidence points elsewhere
Price described adjusting direction when an idea was not working or usability feedback showed that players were struggling. He also said teams should plan scope around what players care about. That approach treats a project’s direction as something to test and refine rather than something leaders must protect unchanged.
Improve the process with the people doing the work
Price said he asked employees how studio processes could improve. Related 2019 reporting by Game Developer described him learning to reduce conflicting executive advice and to build team buy-in around a project’s vision, staffing, and scope. In that account, Price recalled the realization: “That was an important realization for me to have.” His stated lesson was not to stop offering guidance, but to recognize when unsolicited advice could conflict with the project leads’ direction.

What the 2019 tenure figures do—and do not—show
In the GamesBeat interview, Price described a studio of around 260 employees across its locations. He said the leadership team had an average tenure of more than 14 years, about one third of employees had been at Insomniac for more than 10 years, and average tenure across the studio exceeded six years. Price characterized that average as in the 99th percentile of the industry; the interview provides no independent benchmark method, so that percentile should be read as his characterization, not an audited industry statistic. All of these figures describe the studio as reported in 2019.
They help explain why collaboration and feedback featured so prominently in Price’s account, but they do not independently prove what caused people to stay. The interview presents them alongside his own descriptions of the studio’s culture and practices; those are Price’s perspective, not a separate measurement of workplace experience.

Price’s leadership transition is a later chapter
The GamesBeat conversation was framed around Price as Insomniac’s founder and CEO. That is the role he held when the interview was published in 2019. A January 2025 VentureBeat report said he planned to retire in March 2025 after more than 30 years and described a transition to co-studio heads Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider, and Jen Huang. That report records a plan and transition at that time; it should not be treated by itself as fresh confirmation of their current roles.
Read together, the interviews and later report show why Price’s story is about more than a successful superhero game. His account connects Insomniac’s early platform switch, its range of projects, and its leadership practices through a recurring idea: creative work can improve when teams remain open to changing course and to hearing perspectives beyond the person in charge.
