Tangledeep is a deep, turn-based roguelike RPG built around tactical combat, flexible job customization and replayable dungeon runs. That depth is its main attraction—and its main hurdle. Players who enjoy learning interlocking systems and adapting a build will find a lot to explore; newcomers looking for a gentle introduction may find its complexity and difficulty spikes discouraging.
What kind of game is Tangledeep?
Tangledeep is a single-player, turn-based dungeon-crawling roguelike RPG with 16-bit-style presentation. Its dungeons mix procedural variation with handcrafted content, and runs are shaped by tactical encounters, collectible items and character progression. The game also includes monster capture and breeding, alongside multiple modes for players who want to vary the experience.

The core appeal is the interaction between combat and customization. Jobs and skills give players ways to shape a character, while equipment and other collected items add more choices as a run unfolds. Nintendo’s current Switch description lists 13 jobs and more than 100 skills. Steam’s description lists 12 jobs, so those counts should be read as platform-specific store information rather than a single synchronized figure.
What do reviews say about Tangledeep?
Nintendo Life reviewer Dom Reseigh-Lincoln scored the European Switch version 7/10 on February 1, 2019. The review praised its tactical combat, job variety, replayability, monster taming and classic RPG presentation, while warning that dense combat information, numerous interacting systems and difficulty spikes can make it rough for newcomers. The review copy was provided by Impact Gameworks.

Is Tangledeep worth playing?
It is a strong fit if you want a turn-based RPG where planning, experimentation and replaying runs are central to the appeal. Job and skill customization, item choices and monster mechanics give you several systems to engage with, and the combination of changing dungeons and optional modes supports repeated play.
It is a less certain fit if you want a straightforward action game or a forgiving first roguelike. The combat is information-dense, and a broad set of systems asks you to learn how decisions connect. Nintendo Life’s review specifically flags difficulty spikes for newcomers, so expect to spend time understanding the game rather than relying on a smooth introductory ramp.

- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
