That format is its clearest strength, though it takes a little getting used to and the story is less compelling than the group strategy.
What is Sunderfolk?
Sunderfolk is a cooperative, turn-based tactical RPG developed by Secret Door and published by Dreamhaven. Steam lists its release date as April 23, 2025. The adventure takes place across the Sunderlands, with up to four players able to team up online or play couch co-op. Steam’s listing describes missions, tactical combat, character abilities presented as cards, and time spent in the village of Arden between battles.
Missions put heroes on a hexagonal grid. Most focus on defeating enemies, but some add objectives such as defending a location or exploring. Between missions, players can upgrade shops, find gear, and talk to locals. Each hero has a distinct set of ability cards, so the group’s choices and combinations shape how a fight unfolds. GameSpot’s review found collaboration to be the game’s biggest strength, particularly when players discuss positioning, turn order, and how their cards work together.

Patch 2.0 added mouse-and-keyboard controls and PC online multiplayer, along with a new hero and missions. The official Patch 2.0 announcement also describes couch co-op using the Controller app. The phone is therefore a way to play together around a shared display, not a requirement for every PC session.

Ars Technica’s reviewer describes a remote workaround in which the host screen-casts the game to a call and guests connect their phone controllers using the displayed QR code. That is a documented reviewer setup, not a guarantee that every screen-sharing service or network will work equally well.
Does the phone-controller idea work?
For a group in one room, the format keeps everyone’s controls personal while the game remains visible on a shared screen. Ars Technica’s reviewer reports that their group adjusted after a short learning period, had no major trouble with the phone controls, and noticed no appreciable lag during their sessions. That account describes one review group’s experience, not a performance guarantee for every device or connection.

The trade-off is attention. Players sometimes have to shift focus between the main display and a smaller phone screen, and the reviewer reports initial unfamiliarity and occasional confusion when selecting cards. If your group likes discussing a move before committing to it, that pause can suit the game’s tactical rhythm; if everyone wants uninterrupted action, the interface may feel less natural.
What makes the tactical play work for a group?
Combat gives players room to coordinate rather than simply take isolated turns. The group can decide who acts first, where to move, and which ability cards fit together. GameSpot’s review highlights that collaboration as the standout quality, with card combinations and planning becoming more meaningful at higher difficulty settings. On the most casual difficulty, the need for detailed coordination may be lower.

The structure also gives the adventure a useful change of pace: missions focus on grid-based battles and objectives, while Arden offers a quieter interval for shops, gear, and conversations. The story is approachable, but GameSpot found it straightforward rather than especially bold. If your group’s priority is making decisions together, that is less of a drawback than it would be for players seeking a story-led RPG.
