The key trade-off is that local and online play work differently: couch co-op supports up to four players on one copy, while Steam’s online PC mode uses mouse and keyboard and requires each player to own the game.
What kind of game is Sunderfolk?
Developed by Secret Door and published by Dreamhaven, Sunderfolk launched on April 23, 2025. It is listed for Steam on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Its premise is a tactical RPG shaped for a group: players select heroes, coordinate their abilities through missions and bosses, then return to a village where they can improve vendors, find equipment and build relationships.
The publisher describes six hero archetypes: Arcanist, Bard, Berserker, Pyromancer, Ranger and Rogue. Steam’s listing describes skill cards and turn-order choices, while Dreamhaven highlights changing goals and enemy formations. Xbox’s listing also describes changing battlefield conditions and village upgrades. These are the advertised systems; the available sources do not establish how campaign length, difficulty balance or replayability play out in practice.
Combat and village progression
The game’s structure alternates between tactical missions and activity in the village. In combat, the party must coordinate skill-card choices and turn order against enemies and bosses. Between missions, the group can engage with village activities, equipment, vendors and relationships. That mix gives a group both tactical decisions to discuss and progression outside battles, rather than making every session solely about combat.

How does couch co-op work?
For local play, the group shares a TV or monitor running the game. Each player uses a phone or tablet with the free Sunderfolk Controller app, which serves as a controller and displays character-management information. Dreamhaven says one copy supports up to four couch co-op players; Steam says friends can join free through the app. Steam sums up the app’s role as “their hand of cards, guidebook, and controller.”
This setup makes a shared-screen session the most distinct part of Sunderfolk’s pitch: players can keep character information and controls on their own devices while following the same game display. It also makes the phone app part of the practical setup, not an optional extra for the described couch experience. Xbox’s listing likewise says its couch co-op setup requires the free mobile app and identifies iOS and Android phones as supported app platforms.
Can I play Sunderfolk with friends using only one copy?
Yes, for couch co-op: the publisher describes up to four local players using one game copy, with each player joining through the free controller app. Do not assume that one-copy arrangement applies to online play.
Can you play Sunderfolk online, or is it only couch co-op?
It is not limited to couch co-op. Steam describes online PC multiplayer using mouse and keyboard. For that online option, each player needs a copy of the game. This is a separate arrangement from local phone-controller play, and the Steam purchase condition should not be generalized to every console or remote-play setup.

The distinction matters when choosing Sunderfolk for a group: local play is built around a shared display and phones or tablets, while Steam’s online mode is an individual PC setup with mouse-and-keyboard control. The Steam listing also identifies Remote Play Together, but that listing alone does not establish how every remote-play configuration works or whether it changes the purchase requirements for other platforms.
Do you need a phone to play Sunderfolk?
For the described couch co-op experience, yes: players use the free Sunderfolk Controller app on a phone or tablet. But phones are not the only control method across the whole game. Steam lists mouse-and-keyboard control for PC, including its online multiplayer option. If your group is unsure which setup suits it, the Steam trial lets you test the app-based and mouse-and-keyboard controls before buying.
Which platforms can run it, and what does the PC listing require?
Dreamhaven’s launch announcement lists Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, with release on April 23, 2025. For PC, Steam’s listed Windows requirements are:

These are Steam’s listed PC requirements, not performance test results or a comparison of the console versions. Steam lists eight supported interface languages; full-audio and subtitle support varies by language. Xbox’s listing assigns the game an ESRB Everyone 10+ rating and notes fantasy violence.

Can I try Sunderfolk before buying?
Yes. Steam offers a free trial covering the first four missions and says progress transfers to the full game. The listing says players can use the trial to test either phone-app or mouse-and-keyboard controls. This is a useful way to check whether the group prefers the shared-screen format or the PC control option before committing.
What do Steam players think?
On October 8, 2026, Steam displayed 1,911 all-time user reviews, with 93% positive, and 34 reviews from the previous 30 days, with 82% positive. These are changing Steam listing figures, not critic scores or an independent survey; check the live listing for current totals.
Who is Sunderfolk best suited to?
The strongest fit is a group that wants a cooperative tactical RPG and can gather around one display, with a phone or tablet available for each couch player. It may also suit a remote PC group comfortable with mouse and keyboard and with each player owning the game on Steam. The main practical decision is therefore less about choosing between two unrelated game modes than about matching the group’s play setting to the control and purchase arrangement.
