SuperEpic: The Entertainment War Review — Satire, Combos, and Backtracking

SuperEpic pairs corporate satire and combo combat with nonlinear Metroidvania exploration. Its personality is a strength; route-finding and backtracking are the main caveats.

SuperEpic: The Entertainment War turns its anti-microtransaction joke into a compact Metroidvania adventure: explore a corporate dystopia, fight with combo-based combat, and upgrade Tan Tan the raccoon and his ally Ola the llama. Reviewers praised its distinctive humor and pixel-art personality, but Meristation also flagged route-finding and repeated backtracking as potential sources of tedium. It is best suited to players who enjoy old-school exploration and can tolerate some friction between discoveries.

What is SuperEpic: The Entertainment War?

Undercoders developed and published the Steam version, released on December 12, 2019. The official description casts Tan Tan and Ola against RegnantCorp, a corporation that uses abusive microtransactions to control an Orwellian society. The game’s tagline is “VIDEO GAMES ARE DEAD. SEND HELP.” (Steam)

That premise shapes both the humor and the structure. The story mode is a handcrafted, nonlinear action-adventure with multiple endings, exploration, combo combat, and weapon and armor upgrades. Completing it unlocks a procedural roguelite mode. Steam lists the game as single-player with 24 achievements. A PS4 listing also appears on the PlayStation Store; that listing establishes digital availability there, not a physical edition or availability in every region.

What do reviews say about SuperEpic?

Critic and player scores describe different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed a 76/100 Metascore from 10 critic reviews in a 2026-accessed snapshot. Steam showed “Mostly Positive,” with 70% positive from 86 user reviews in one snapshot; a separate localized Steam snapshot showed 71% from 87 reviews. These storefront figures can change as reviews are added or recategorized.

Superepic: The Entertainment War - Nintendo Switch
  • In a not-too-distant future dystopia, a single videogame development company, Regnantcorp, controls an Orwellian society by enslaving the population with their addictive free games
  • As a rebellious racoon, along with your llama steed, you'll explore a surreal castle-like office full of enemies, challenges, secrets and corporate pigs
  • Break into their headquarters, uncover the conspiracy and save videogames

The positive critical case centers on the game’s personality and play. Steam reproduces Cultured Vultures’ 8.5/10 verdict, “One of 2019’s best indie games,” and Nintendo Life’s 8/10 assessment that it is “a lot of fun to play.” Metacritic’s page lists Cultured Vultures’ December 5, 2019 review and Meristation’s January 3, 2020 review, the latter praising humor, exploration, and combat. These are attributed assessments, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy the pacing.

How do combat and exploration work?

Combo-based fighting and upgrades

Combat gives the game a more active rhythm than a simple sequence of platforming rooms. Tan Tan fights with combo-based attacks, while weapon and armor upgrades provide progression as the player explores. Meristation singled out the combo system as one of the game’s strengths. The available reviews support that broad appeal, though they do not establish a detailed comparison of individual weapons or upgrade balance.

  • Cross media experience: hidden QR codes launch small mini games running on HTML5, which have to be completed on mobile in order to uncover secrets in the game.
  • two game modes: a more classic story-driven mode with Handcrafted levels, and a replay able roguelike mode with procedurally generated maps.
  • solid progression: RPG like weapon and armor upgrading system, with tonnes of items to collect and discover.
  • gorgeous neogeo quality: 16/32 bit era cartoon sprites, with Super fluid animations and spectacular final bosses

Nonlinear routes and revisiting areas

Exploration is built around finding routes through a connected world rather than moving through a strictly linear campaign. That can make uncovering a new passage satisfying, but it also asks players to remember where they have been and revisit earlier areas. Meristation noted that some routes can be hard to find and that repeated traversal may become tedious. Players who prefer clear navigation and constant forward progress may find this less appealing than fans of traditional Metroidvania loops.

How difficult and tedious is it?

The cited coverage does not provide a consistent difficulty rating, completion time, or measured checkpoint spacing, so it would be misleading to label the game easy or hard across the board. Meristation’s specific pacing concern is that checkpoints grow farther apart, making a mistake more frustrating when paired with backtracking. That is a review observation rather than a platform-wide performance test.

  • Economy Based Upgrading System - Earn money based on your combat performance and decide how to invest it: in life, magic or stamina?.

In practical terms, the main warning is about patience: expect to search for routes and sometimes retrace your steps. If that kind of navigation is part of the appeal of a Metroidvania, the friction may be manageable; if you want a tightly guided action game, it could wear thin.

Does SuperEpic have phone minigames, and can you skip them?

Steam describes optional QR-linked mobile minigames, and says they can be skipped without hindering story progress. Meristation describes QR codes that open mobile web versions of familiar minigame formats; it also notes that they can unlock areas or currency. The sources do not establish whether those mobile pages still operate on every platform today, so treat them as optional cross-media extras rather than a dependable requirement or feature for a particular device.

Is SuperEpic: The Entertainment War worth playing?

It is a reasonable pick for players drawn to satirical indie adventures, pixel art, combo combat, and nonlinear exploration. The game’s identity is more distinctive than its familiar Metroidvania framework, and reviewers recognized both its humor and fighting. The clearest reservation is traversal: hard-to-find routes, backtracking, and increasingly distant checkpoints can turn exploration into a chore. Whether it is worth playing depends less on the anti-microtransaction premise than on how much you enjoy that style of map-making and revisiting areas.
