SuperData estimated that games and interactive media generated $139.9 billion in 2020, a 12% increase from 2019. That headline covers more than digital games: the report puts digital-game revenue at $126.6 billion, with gaming video content and XR included in the broader total. It attributes the year’s acceleration to pandemic conditions, but its estimates do not isolate COVID-19 from other factors shaping the market.
What the $139.9 billion figure includes
SuperData’s 2020 Year in Review, published in 2021, reported $139.9 billion in earnings for games and interactive media, up 12% year over year. Within that wider scope, digital games accounted for $126.6 billion, also up 12%. The distinction matters: the $139.9 billion figure is not a digital-games-only market total.
The broader report also covers gaming video content (GVC), such as gaming-related video, and extended reality (XR). SuperData reported $9.3 billion for GVC and $6.7 billion for XR. These category figures should not be added to reconstruct the headline total: the report says some earnings overlap across segments, including Pokémon GO appearing in both mobile games and XR. Where digital-game revenue came from
Mobile was the largest of the three digital-games platform segments reported, ahead of PC and console.

| Platform | 2020 revenue reported by SuperData |
|---|---|
| Mobile | $73.8 billion |
| PC | $33.1 billion |
| Console | $19.7 billion |
The amounts are SuperData’s 2020 estimates, published in 2021. They sum to the report’s $126.6 billion digital-games figure. They describe revenue by platform, not sales of hardware or a ranking of devices to buy.
Free-to-play remained dominant, while premium grew faster
Free-to-play games generated 78% of digital-game revenue in 2020, according to SuperData. Yet premium games had the faster year-over-year growth: premium revenue rose 28%, compared with 9% for free-to-play. The figures describe different things—free-to-play’s share of the revenue base and each model’s growth rate—so faster premium growth does not mean premium had the larger total.

Growth accelerated after the first two months
SuperData said digital-game earnings increased 6% year over year in January and February 2020, then 14% during the rest of the year. The report connected the acceleration with COVID-19 restrictions: people spent more time at home, sought ways to interact remotely, and had fewer alternative entertainment options available.
This is the report’s explanation of the market’s pattern, not a measurement that isolates the pandemic’s causal effect. The annual estimates do not separate lockdown effects from game releases, platform mix, or trends already underway. SuperData also noted variation by region and game type, so the overall growth rate should not be read as a uniform change across every market.

XR and VR were part of the broader picture
SuperData put XR revenue at $6.7 billion for 2020. Within that broader category, VR games generated $589 million, up 25% year over year. VR games are only one part of XR, and the report’s overlap warning means XR should not be treated as revenue wholly separate from game-platform totals.
How to read this as a historical market estimate
The figures are estimates from SuperData, then a Nielsen company, in its 2021 review of 2020—not audited financial statements or a current forecast. The report also projected that interactive-entertainment earnings would rise 2% to $142.2 billion in 2021; that was a forecast made at the time, not a present-day outlook. GamesBeat’s January 2021 coverage summarized the report and its pandemic context.
