Metacritic labels that result “Mixed or Average”: 12 reviews are positive, three mixed, and one negative. The score suggests a generally favorable but divided reception—not a universal verdict, and not a review of every platform edition.
What the critic score says
Metacritic’s snapshot is useful for gauging the broad critical response, but the individual reviews explain why opinions differ. The positive reviews tend to value the crossover cast, character interactions, tactical RPG foundations, and animated battles. More critical reviews focus on familiar presentation, interface clarity, pacing, stage variety, and how much challenge the encounters provide.
Those are differences in reviewers’ priorities as much as differences in the game: spectacle and fan-service can be a major draw for one player, while another may be more sensitive to repetitive stages or a dense story.
What reviewers praise
The crossover and its characters
Several favorable excerpts highlight the appeal of bringing characters and franchises together. Metacritic lists PSX Brasil describing the game as an “excellent crossover” and praising its gameplay and story. Gamesurf calls it a solid SRPG with extensive character interactions and spectacle. These are individual critics’ assessments, not a claim that every crossover lands equally well for every player.

- Tactical role-playing game with crossover mecha franchises
- Extensive unit customization and upgrades
- Story-driven missions with anime-style battles
- Large list of iconic robots and pilots
- Turn-based grid battle for strategy fans
Tactical combat and animated battles
Positive coverage also responds to the tactical RPG structure and the spectacle of combat. Bandai Namco describes the game as featuring grid-based, turn-based battles, unit and pilot upgrades, and Assist Link: selected support characters can use commands and gain experience. The publisher’s SUPER ROBOT WARS Y overview describes those systems; individual reviewers differ on how satisfying the overall experience is.
A possible entry point
Worth Playing calls Y a fun series entry and suggests it may be a stronger starting point than SUPER ROBOT WARS 30. MeriStation’s Spanish-language review, updated October 4, 2025, says the main story is independent and intended to welcome newcomers, while also warning that the many crossover references can be difficult to follow. A standalone plot does not necessarily make every character or franchise reference self-explanatory.

What reviewers criticize
Interface and presentation
Not every critic finds the presentation as polished as the battle spectacle. Metacritic lists This Is Game’s assessment that the game has “reused animations and crude UI.” MeriStation also criticizes the interface, while praising the combat animations and the appeal of seeing favorite characters. The contrast is useful: animated attacks may impress even when menus or other parts of the presentation feel less refined.
Pacing, repetition, and difficulty
MeriStation describes the narrative as slow and dense, and criticizes repetitive settings and the limited challenge of most encounters outside Expert difficulty. Shacknews likewise notes a slow start, saying the story hook “misses the gas pedal,” while judging that the series’ established foundations and showmanship carry the game through. These comments point to possible friction for players seeking a brisk story or consistently demanding battles; they do not establish that every stage or difficulty setting feels the same.
Is SUPER ROBOT WARS Y worth playing?
The critic response points to a good fit for players who want a mecha-anime crossover, character interactions, turn-based tactical combat, upgrades, and showy battle sequences. It is a more uncertain fit if clear menus, fast narrative momentum, varied settings, or sustained challenge are your priorities. If difficulty matters, look closely at reviews that discuss Expert mode rather than treating comments about the default experience as universal.
Also distinguish reviews of the base game from assessments that include paid add-ons. Bandai Namco’s official expansion page reports an Anniversary Expansion Pack, while Steam lists separately sold DLC and editions. Those additions are separate value decisions; they should not be used to infer the quality of the base game.

How to read reviews before deciding
- Crossover writing: Check whether a reviewer knows the represented anime series, and whether they find the character interactions engaging or hard to follow.
- Difficulty: Look for the difficulty setting discussed, particularly whether the review addresses Expert mode.
- Interface and customization: Consider whether the review evaluates menu clarity and how well the game explains its upgrades and systems.
- Presentation: Separate praise for battle animations from comments on reused assets, stages, and non-battle scenes.
- Scope: Confirm whether a review covers only the base game or also paid DLC.
For platform availability and the publisher’s description of gameplay, consult Bandai Namco’s game page. The Metacritic page provides the aggregate and review links; its score and review count can change over time.
