The concern raised in two July 2025 reports is narrower: buyers said their consoles lost access to Nintendo online services after they used secondhand cards they believed may have been copied or involved in unauthorized use. Those are individual accounts, not proof of a widespread problem or a documented account of Nintendo’s detection system.
What happened in the reported cases?
Four used games bought through Facebook Marketplace
Tom’s Hardware reported on July 12, 2025, that a buyer using the Reddit name “dmanthey” said their Switch 2 was restricted after they inserted four preowned Switch games purchased through Facebook Marketplace. According to the report, Nintendo support attributed the restriction to pirated games. The buyer said they provided the marketplace listing and photos of the cards, after which the restriction was reversed. This is a customer account reported by the outlet, not a Nintendo-published case record or a guarantee of the same outcome for someone else. Tom’s Hardware’s report describes the incident.

A preowned Bayonetta 3 card bought on eBay
In a separate report dated July 15, 2025, Tom’s Hardware said creator Quinn Nelson reported a restriction from Nintendo online services after using a preowned Bayonetta 3 card bought on eBay. Nelson suspected that the card had been copied before resale; the report does not independently establish the card’s history. The second report is also an individual account.
What Nintendo’s guidance says—and does not say
Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ describes circumvention products as devices that bypass security measures to enable unauthorized copying, modification, or play of unauthorized ROMs. It names MIG Switch/MIG Flash among piracy cartridges and warns that unauthorized devices can reduce functionality, including online play; consoles may stop working after network updates.

- Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.
That guidance addresses circumvention and unauthorized use. It does not say that ordinary secondhand ownership, or a used card alone, automatically triggers a restriction. Nor does the page explain the technical method Nintendo uses to identify suspected copied cards, how often restrictions occur in this scenario, or a formal appeal process. The two reported cases therefore should not be read as evidence that every preowned card is risky or that Nintendo can always identify a copied card.
How to reduce uncertainty when buying preowned
No seller, retailer, receipt, or packaging check is established as a way to guarantee that a card has not been copied or otherwise misused. Choosing a seller with a documented transaction and a usable return route can, however, preserve options if the purchase is disputed.

- Keep the original listing and its description, including the seller’s account or business details.
- Save proof of payment and any messages about the game’s condition, ownership, or returns.
- Take clear photos of the physical card and packaging when you receive it.
- Prefer a transaction with a record you can retrieve and a stated return process.
These records may help explain where the card came from if you need to contact support; they do not establish that Nintendo will reverse a restriction. In the Facebook Marketplace account, the buyer said the listing and card photos were relevant to the reversal, but that one outcome is not an official promise.
What to do if Nintendo online services are restricted
- Check the on-screen message and identify whether it specifically says access to online services is restricted, rather than reporting that the card cannot be read.
- Contact Nintendo Support and provide the relevant details, such as the game card involved, when the restriction appeared, and your saved listing, payment confirmation, messages, and photos.
- Keep the records and any support correspondence together in case you need to clarify the purchase history.
Nintendo’s UK Switch 2 warranty document says proof of purchase is part of a warranty claim, but warranty terms are regional and apply to warranty claims—not an established appeal policy for online-service restrictions. See the UK Switch 2 warranty document for that distinction.

Do not mistake a card-read problem for a ban
A card that fails to load or is incompatible presents a different problem from a console restriction on online services. Nintendo’s game-card troubleshooting guidance covers read and compatibility issues. Nintendo says Switch 2 exclusive game cards do not work on the original Switch. Switch 2 Edition cards can be used on the original Switch to play the original Switch version, without the Switch 2 enhancements. Neither incompatibility nor a read error should be described as a ban.
