Some compatible Nintendo Switch games load faster or run more steadily on Switch 2 without a game-specific update, Nintendo says. Those improvements are not guaranteed across the library, and Nintendo has not published a complete game-by-game performance comparison. Switch 2 also has an optional Handheld Mode Boost setting, but it is a separate feature with its own trade-offs.
What improves when you play Switch games on Switch 2?
Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta said that, when Nintendo tried Switch games on Switch 2, some had faster loading times or more stable performance. That describes observed improvements in some games, not a promise that every title will run faster or more smoothly. Nintendo has not provided a complete game-by-game measurement table, so there is no supported universal performance percentage to apply to your collection. (Nintendo developer interview, April 2025)

Nintendo says Switch 2 has significantly improved CPU and GPU performance compared with the original system. That hardware capability helps explain why some games may benefit, but it does not determine the result for any particular game. (Nintendo Switch 2 announcement, April 2, 2025)
How Handheld Mode Boost is different
Handheld Mode Boost is an optional system setting, not the explanation for every improvement Nintendo observed. When enabled, original Switch software played while Switch 2 is undocked runs as if it were being played in TV mode. Nintendo says this may improve visuals, but the effect varies by software and some games are unaffected. (Nintendo support: Handheld Mode Boost)

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Turn it on or off
- On Switch 2, open System Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Nintendo Switch Software Handling.
- Select Handheld Mode Boost and enable or disable it.
Because the setting forces TV-mode operation during handheld play, some on-screen instructions may be incorrect or fail. Nintendo also warns that it can increase power consumption, may prevent touchscreen use, and treats attached Joy-Con 2 controllers as a Switch 2 Pro Controller. Consider those effects if a game relies on touch input or a particular controller behavior. (Nintendo support: Handheld Mode Boost)
Will your Switch library work?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. For a specific game’s status, Nintendo recommends checking with its publisher. (Nintendo: Switch 2 compatibility and game upgrades; Nintendo support: playing Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2)

Nintendo said in a 2025 developer interview that it was checking more than 10,000 games one by one. That number was the testing scope Nintendo reported at the time—not a count of games guaranteed to be fully compatible, run perfectly, or receive a performance improvement. The interview also noted that some games depend on specific hardware configurations, and that some accessories or physical designs cannot work as intended on Switch 2. How to check whether a particular game benefits
There is no official, complete performance chart in Nintendo’s cited materials. For a useful comparison, check the exact game and version you play, its compatibility status, and whether you are comparing handheld play with TV mode. Pay attention separately to loading time, frame-rate stability, visual presentation and controls; an improvement in one area does not establish an improvement in the others.

- Check Nintendo’s compatibility information and the game’s publisher for title-specific issues.
- Look for a game-specific update or upgrade before attributing a change to backward compatibility alone.
- If playing undocked, compare Handheld Mode Boost both on and off, especially if the game uses touchscreen controls or has unusual controller requirements.
Backward-compatibility gains are not the same as game upgrades
Some Switch games may benefit simply from running on Switch 2, without a game-specific patch. Separately, certain titles receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance on Switch 2. Those title-specific changes are not evidence of a no-patch gain, and Nintendo’s compatibility information distinguishes them from backward compatibility. (Nintendo: Switch 2 compatibility and game upgrades)
Is Switch 2 worthwhile for your existing games?
If faster loading or steadier play in some compatible games matters to you, Switch 2 may improve parts of your existing library—but the benefit depends on the titles you actually play, and Nintendo does not promise a boost for each one. Check compatibility and publisher notices for those games first. If you mostly play undocked, also consider whether Handheld Mode Boost’s possible visual benefits are worth its power use and potential control or touchscreen changes. The Nintendo Switch 2 console is required to play compatible Switch games on Switch 2 and use that setting.
