If The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO) will not open or keeps crashing on PC, first pinpoint where it fails: the ESO launcher, Steam’s Play handoff, or the game client after launch. Then use the matching steps below. These are eight troubleshooting fixes drawn from ESO Support guidance, not guaranteed solutions; not every step applies to every setup.
1. Identify where startup fails
Note what happens immediately before the failure. A launcher that stalls while checking for updates is different from Steam showing Play without starting the game, a black screen after you press Play, or a silent crash after the client begins loading. If an error appears, record its exact wording or code.
- ESO launcher will not start or stalls: use the launcher-specific checks in step 7.
- Steam Play does nothing: follow the Steam diagnostics in step 7.
- Black screen, “ESO has stopped working,” or a silent crash: work through the client, add-on, graphics, and Windows checks in steps 2–6.
- Error 118 or Fatal Error 6, 11, or 12: use the relevant guidance in steps 3 and 7.

2. Check system requirements and restart
Confirm that the PC meets ESO’s minimum system requirements for the current game setup. If the launcher itself is stuck, close it and restart the computer before trying again; ESO Support lists a restart among the basic launcher checks. Start with the requirements published by ESO Support.

3. Repair the game client
Use the ESO Launcher’s repair option to check the installation before trying more invasive fixes.
- Open the ESO Launcher.
- Choose Game Options.
- Select Repair and let the process finish.
- Try launching the game again.
ESO recommends repair for several crash and launch cases. For Fatal Error 6, 11, or 12, its guidance also describes running the launcher as administrator and, if repair does not help, reinstalling the launcher using the route appropriate to a standalone or Steam installation. 4. Temporarily remove add-ons and saved settings from the test
An add-on or related configuration can be involved in a crash. To test this without deleting your setup, close the game and move the relevant add-on and configuration folders out of their current location temporarily. ESO’s instructions for Windows 10 and 11 identify AddOns, SavedVariables, and AddOnSettings; its other crash guidance also recommends disabling or removing add-ons.

Try launching the game with those items out of the way. If the crash remains, restore them; if the game starts, add them back selectively to identify what changes the result. Follow the folder-specific steps in ESO Support’s Windows 10/11 silent-crash article, rather than deleting folders you may want to keep.
5. Update graphics drivers and check which GPU ESO uses
Install current graphics drivers using the process provided by your GPU manufacturer. If the PC has both integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card, check that the game executable, ESO64.exe, is assigned to the intended primary or high-performance GPU. A system can start the game on a different GPU than the one you expect.
ESO includes driver and GPU-selection checks in its black-screen guidance, stopped-working guidance, and Steam launch guide. Use the instructions for your graphics hardware and Windows version.

6. Update Windows components and restart
For the crash cases covered by ESO Support, check for Windows updates and update the relevant DirectX and Visual C++ components using official Microsoft sources. Restart the PC after installing updates, then test the game again. Do not download system components from unofficial software-download sites.

Choose the branch that matches the failure rather than changing every system setting at once. Make one change, test, and undo it if it does not help.

If Steam shows Play but nothing happens
- Clear Steam’s download cache, then try launching again.
- Temporarily disconnect a connected controller as a diagnostic.
- Check the GPU assignment and power settings, repair the ESO client, and review the Steam-specific security and DirectX checks.
- If the issue persists, a clean boot can help test whether another startup program is interfering.

If the ESO launcher will not start or gets stuck updating
After restarting, check whether antivirus software is interfering, whether Windows is up to date, and whether proxy settings or programs loaded at startup affect the launcher. ESO’s launcher guidance also covers reinstalling the launcher when needed and examining launcher ProgramData or log files. Use the launcher troubleshooting article for the applicable instructions.
If you see Error 118
ESO Support says: “If you receive an Error 118, this indicates that something is blocking the game from loading properly usually related to an anti-virus or firewall program.” Check your security software’s instructions and add a narrow exception for the correct ESO, launcher, or Steam files or folders. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a permanent workaround. The error-specific steps are in ESO Support’s Error 118 article.

If the game crashes without an error on Windows 10 or 11
In addition to moving add-on settings aside, ESO’s Windows-specific guidance includes testing compatibility mode, running the game as administrator, checking appropriate security exceptions, and reviewing DPI settings. These are system-specific diagnostics, not universal fixes; apply them using the instructions for silent Windows crashes.
If “ESO has stopped working” appears
After repair and the add-on, driver, and Windows checks, ESO recommends testing lower view distance, resolution, or graphics quality, or turning off anti-aliasing. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash. See ESO Support’s stopped-working article.

Include the exact error code or message, whether you use Steam or the standalone launcher, and whether the failure occurs in the launcher, at Steam’s handoff, or inside the game client.
