Those figures measure different audiences and should not be treated as one overall score.
How reviewers rate The House of the Dead: Remake
The remake of the 1997 arcade rail shooter has a mixed-to-average critical aggregate. Player storefront ratings are more favorable in the snapshots available, but they reflect different platforms, audiences, and sample sizes rather than a single consensus.
| Source and platform | Rating snapshot | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Metacritic (Switch critic reviews) | 57 Metascore; 41 critic reviews listed; “Mixed or Average” | Critic aggregate. It is a Switch-specific snapshot, not a platform-neutral score. |
| Steam (English user reviews) | 68% positive from 1,353 reviews | English-language player reviews on Steam. |
| Steam (recent reviews) | 58% positive from 24 recent reviews | A much smaller, time-sensitive sample; it can shift quickly. |
| PlayStation Store (US) | 4.22 out of 5 from approximately 1,847 ratings | Store user rating, not a critic score. |
These are storefront and aggregation snapshots accessed in 2026, not fixed review totals. Steam’s percentages describe its user-review sentiment; PlayStation’s figure is a store rating; Metacritic aggregates critics. A higher user rating on one store does not establish that its version is better than another platform’s release.
What the remake is—and what the ratings cannot tell you
The House of the Dead: Remake revisits the 1997 arcade rail shooter. The core format sends players along fixed routes while they aim at targets, retaining the arcade-style premise rather than presenting an open-ended shooter. Steam lists MegaPixel Studio as developer, Forever Entertainment as publisher, and April 28, 2022 as the release date.
#1 Best Overall
- A complete remake of the arcade smash hit House of the Dead
- Updated visuals, sound, and mechanics
- New cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes including Zombie Horde mode
- An integrated achievement system for added replay value
- Unlock a bestiary of creatures to help identify enemy weaknesses
The available ratings help indicate reception, but they do not establish how responsive the controls feel, how the remake compares technically with the original arcade game, or which release performs best. No hands-on comparison or platform-by-platform performance assessment is established here, so those are not grounds for a definitive platform recommendation.
Platforms, controls, and local play
The official PlayStation listing covers PS4 and PS5, describes gyro aiming as a feature, and lists local play for one to two players. That supports a local two-player option on the PlayStation product listing; do not assume the same player count or control options for every platform without checking its own store page.
Rank #2
- Whether solo or with a partner, face up to new zombies andeven tougher bosses in this intense, fast-paced shooter game
- A complete remake (visuals, sound, gameplay mechanics) of the iconic arcade shooter game released in 1998
- Play alone or with a partner using the joysticks and enjoy optimised handling for more precise aiming
- Non-stop action to relive the thrill of arcade games
- Several routes to explore and several endings to be discovered depending on how you play (solo or co-op mode, number of continues, etc.)
Control options are especially relevant for a rail shooter because aiming is central to play. The PlayStation listing’s gyro feature is a platform-specific detail, not proof of identical control behavior across PS4, PS5, Switch, or Steam. Check the store listing and platform-specific documentation for the version you intend to use.
Is The House of the Dead: Remake worth it?
The ratings point to a remake with divided critic reception and generally more positive, but not uniform, player-store feedback in the snapshots cited. It is most clearly suited to readers interested in revisiting the fixed-route arcade rail-shooter format, particularly those who want the option of local two-player play on PlayStation. If your decision depends on a particular platform’s controls, technical quality, or a close comparison with the original, these aggregates alone cannot settle it.

Physical edition availability
