Tencent reportedly bought a 15.75% stake in Arrowhead Game Studios for about $80 million. That is a minority investment in the studio—not a purchase of Arrowhead outright, and not evidence by itself that Tencent controls Helldivers 2. Reports published on June 6, 2025, relayed the deal details from Swedish outlet Dagens Industri; the sources found did not include a public transaction announcement from either company.
What Tencent reportedly bought
According to coverage citing Dagens Industri, Tencent acquired 15.75% of Arrowhead Game Studios. PCGamesInsider reported that Arrowhead’s founders retained 84.24% after the transaction. These percentages describe reported ownership; they do not establish how voting rights are arranged or who holds particular governance powers. (PCGamesInsider; Gamereactor)
The distinction matters: a 15.75% equity stake is not the same as acquiring the whole developer. The reports do not establish a Tencent board seat, veto rights, or other terms that would show how much influence the investment carries in practice.
Reported price and valuation
PCGamesInsider, citing Dagens Industri, put the reported consideration at $80 million and Arrowhead’s implied valuation at SEK 5.1 billion, which the outlet rendered as approximately $532.8 million. Other coverage rounded the investment to about $80 million or described it as close to $83 million. These are reported figures, not a purchase price for all of Arrowhead; the SEK valuation is the reported implied value of the company in the transaction context. When the deal happened—and when it became public
Gamereactor reported that the transaction was completed in July 2024. The coverage describing it appeared later, on June 6, 2025. That June date is the reporting publication date, not the reported closing date. (Gamereactor)
Why the investment drew attention
Arrowhead is closely associated with Helldivers 2, its hit cooperative shooter for PlayStation 5 and PC. Reporting connected the investment with the potential to reach Chinese players. Gamereactor attributed the remark “Chinese player base is the holy grail in the gaming industry” to Arrowhead co-founder Johan Pilestedt. What the reports say about Arrowhead’s finances
PCGamesInsider and Windows Central reported SEK 959 million in Arrowhead revenue or turnover for 2024 and SEK 729 million in profit. Windows Central called the latter operating profit, while PCGamesInsider summarized it as profit. These are figures reported in secondary coverage, not figures verified here against Arrowhead’s underlying accounts; the difference in accounting label is worth keeping in view. The reporting describes Tencent as a minority shareholder in Arrowhead, not the owner of the entire studio. A stake in the developer also should not be recast as ownership or control of Helldivers 2. The reports cited here do not specify Tencent’s operating role or establish that it can direct Arrowhead’s future decisions. A percentage alone cannot answer those governance questions.
