Techland’s CEO announced the planned majority-shareholder arrangement on July 24, 2023, while a January 2024 report said the acquisition had been completed. The studio’s transaction adviser later put Tencent’s stake at approximately 67%; the deal price was not disclosed.
When did Tencent’s Techland deal happen?
On July 24, 2023, Techland founder and CEO Paweł Marchewka announced that Tencent was “in the process of becoming Techland’s majority shareholder.” That described a transaction still in progress, not a completed purchase. A report published January 10, 2024, said Tencent had completed its acquisition of a controlling stake. Techland’s announcement and the later completion report establish the distinction between the two dates.

How much of Techland does Tencent own?
Techland’s transaction adviser, Rymarz Zdort Maruta, said Tencent acquired approximately 67% of Techland’s shares. That figure is the adviser’s reported stake, not a purchase-price disclosure or a valuation of the company. TechCrunch reported at the time of the announcement that the deal terms were not disclosed; the sources cited here do not state the price.
What did Techland say would change?
Marchewka presented the partnership as a way to advance Techland’s plans, naming the Dying Light franchise and a fantasy action RPG then in development. Those were the CEO’s stated goals at the time of the 2023 announcement, not confirmation of the RPG’s current status or evidence that Tencent directed either project.

He also said: “We will retain full ownership of our IPs, maintain creative freedom, and continue to operate the way we believe is right.” This was Techland’s commitment as expressed in its announcement. It should not be treated as independent proof that every later studio decision was made without influence from its majority shareholder.
