Warren Zaïre-Emery is the clearest first choice among the defensive-midfielder wonderkids covered by FM24 specialist lists. For a broader shortlist, Marc Bernal has the strongest cross-source support, while Roméo Lavia, Lucas Gourna-Douath, Máximo Perrone, Gabriel Moscardo, Arthur Vermeeren, Adam Wharton and Giacomo Faticanti round out ten plausible options. This is an editorial ranking for Football Manager 2024, not an official game ranking or a prediction of real-world careers.
The 10 best defensive midfielder wonderkids in FM24
The order below weighs three things the available FM24 lists can substantiate: explicit specialist-list endorsement, overlap between independent guides, and inclusion in FM Scout’s defensive-midfielder database. It does not claim to rank hidden potential or transfer value precisely: comparable profiles and guaranteed costs are not established for all ten players.
-
Warren Zaïre-Emery
The specialist defensive-midfielder list names Zaïre-Emery its standout, making him the strongest lead recommendation in this group. That endorsement is specific to the source’s FM24 shortlist, not a guarantee that every save will develop him the same way.
-
Marc Bernal
Bernal appears across the specialist list, PC Gamer’s selection and FM Scout’s defensive-midfielder database. That breadth of independent inclusion makes him the most consistently supported name after Zaïre-Emery in this pool.

-
Roméo Lavia
Lavia is included in FM Scout’s FM24 defensive-midfielder table. He is a database-backed shortlist option, though the available evidence does not establish a comparable transfer cost or a universal best role for him.
-
Lucas Gourna-Douath
Gourna-Douath also features in FM Scout’s positional table. Consider him as a candidate from that database framework rather than assuming he outranks players selected by other guides.
Rank #2
-
Máximo Perrone
Perrone’s inclusion is supported by FM Scout’s defensive-midfielder table. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like profile that would justify a precise claim about his attributes, price or development relative to the other entries.
-
Gabriel Moscardo
Moscardo is named by the specialist FM24 defensive-midfielder list. That makes him a position-specific option for managers comparing candidates from that guide, although the source evidence here does not support a guaranteed fee or development outcome.

Arthur Vermeeren
Vermeeren is another specialist-list selection. His place reflects that source’s candidate pool and editorial judgment, not a universal consensus across all FM24 wonderkid lists.
-
Adam Wharton
PC Gamer includes Wharton in its short defensive-midfielder wonderkid selection. His support is narrower in this source set than Bernal’s, so treat him as an independently recommended alternative rather than a consensus pick.
-
Giacomo Faticanti
Faticanti is also named by PC Gamer. He expands the shortlist beyond the names recurring in FM Scout or the specialist list, but there is not enough comparable evidence here to assign a firm value or attribute-based advantage.
-
One more shortlist place: use your database and save
The cited candidate pool supports nine distinct names: Zaïre-Emery, Bernal, Lavia, Gourna-Douath, Perrone, Moscardo, Vermeeren, Wharton and Faticanti. The sources do not establish a tenth distinct player with equivalent support. Rather than invent a name to satisfy the headline, use the in-game player search to identify an additional candidate in your own database, then check position, age and availability in that save.

How to interpret “wonderkid” and this ranking
Definitions differ. FM Scout defines a wonderkid as a player with potential ability (PA) of at least 150 who is no older than 20 on its in-game reference date, 3 July 2023. The specialist defensive-midfielder list accepts players aged 21 or under at the start of a save, so its eligible pool is broader. A player can appear in one source and not another without that being a contradiction.
FM Scout’s 1–100 recommendation rating is its own assessment based on potential ability; it is not an official Sports Interactive score. Potential is not a guaranteed outcome: development can vary between saves, and the sources do not provide a shared simulation sample or success-rate statistic. The ordering here is therefore an editorial synthesis of list support and positional relevance, not a numerical forecast.
Which FM24 database are you using?
Football Manager 2024’s player data changed during the game’s release. Sports Interactive announced the FM24 Main Data Update on 29 February 2024, saying it included more than six million data changes and updated squads after the latest transfer window. The announcement also says a new save is required for those changes to apply. Read the official update announcement.
The update did not make every league equally current: Sports Interactive noted that some licensed leagues with calendar-year seasons reflected rosters only through the end of 2023, excluding transfers in and out during 2024. FM Scout’s wonderkid list was revised to revision 5 on 10 April 2024 to reflect patch 24.4 changes. Its ratings and table should be understood in that stated context, rather than silently mixed with another database version.

Quick Recap
How to choose a defensive midfielder in your save
- Check your database first. Confirm that the save uses the player data you intend to evaluate; later official data changes do not alter an existing save.
- Verify eligibility in your game. Source definitions use different age cutoffs, and player details may depend on the database context.
- Inspect the player in your save. These guides support shortlist inclusion, but they do not provide complete comparable attribute profiles for all ten candidates.
- Check availability and cost directly. Transfer estimates from an FM24 guide are not guaranteed prices; club demands and player availability are save-dependent.
- Choose for your squad, not the label. A wonderkid designation is not proof of immediate readiness, a particular role fit or a specific development path.
