There is no single objective ranking of the best PS5 games: a demanding roguelite, a story-led blockbuster and a competitive multiplayer game serve very different players. This list is an editorially curated starting point, grouped by the kind of experience each game offers. It favors variety over a claim that one order suits everyone. Availability changes, so check your regional PlayStation Store listing before buying; Sony’s US PS5 catalog distinguishes games available now from those still coming soon.
How to choose from this list
Use the descriptions to find a fit for your preferred genre, challenge level and play style. Some picks are designed primarily for solo play; others are strongest with friends or in competition. A game being on this list does not mean it is exclusive to PS5: some recommendations are also available on other platforms.

Different rankings answer different questions. GameSpot’s 2026 guide and TechRadar’s 2026 list are editorial selections, while Metacritic’s current-year PS5 list is a critic-score snapshot. Sony’s monthly download charts show what sold or downloaded in a particular region and month, not what is universally best. For example, Resident Evil Requiem topped both the US/Canada and European PS5 download charts in February 2026, but the rest of each region’s ranking differed. Sony notes that product names can vary by region and upgrades are excluded from those charts. See PlayStation Store: February 2026’s top downloads.
Release status also matters: Sony’s catalog includes featured games with 2026 release dates, including SAROS, Marathon and 007 First Light. A listed release date is not proof that a game is currently playable in your region; confirm its store status before choosing it. The picks below focus on established PS5 options, but regional availability and editions can change.
#1 Best Overall
- BECOME A FEARSOME PIRATE- Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade. With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.
- A CLASSIC REBUILT FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE- Combat has been rebuilt for more dynamic encounters, emphasizing parries and takedowns, while stealth and parkour have been improved for smoother escapes and assassinations. Continuously upgrade the Jackdaw to face powerful enemy ships with enhanced naval mechanics featuring new alternate fire modes. Quality-of-life additions also address previous pain points, ensuring your experience is improved.
- THE CARIBBEAN LIKE NEVER BEFORE- Whether you’re sailing the open seas or journeying across untamed lands, discover a seamless open world built with the latest Anvil engine. Take in sweeping vistas as you brave stormy waters, dive into underwater shipwrecks, or push through dense tropical jungles. Enhanced by features such as Dolby Atmos and ray tracing, every scene feels more immersive, bringing the world’s beauty to life.
- EXPANDING EDWARD’S ADVENTURE- Building on top of the original story, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced introduces exclusive new content. Familiar faces will return, with new storylines dedicated to fan-favorite characters such as Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. Unexpected allies will also cross your path, as three officers join you on your journey as part of the main narrative. More surprises await, such as new sea shanties, pets, a photo mode, and more.
Platforming and action-adventure
1. Astro Bot
Best for: A joyful, single-player platforming adventure and a showcase of PS5 play. GameSpot calls it a must-play recommendation for the platform. It is a strong choice if you want colorful, focused action rather than a sprawling RPG or online competition. Check the game’s product page for current audience and difficulty details.
2. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Best for: Players who want brisk action-platforming with a cinematic presentation. GameSpot highlights it as a PS5 technical showcase. It works as a straightforward pick for someone looking for a polished, story-led adventure rather than a multiplayer game.
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Best for: Superhero action and a story-driven blockbuster set in New York. You play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, making it a natural fit for readers who want cinematic combat and traversal. It is a single-player choice; familiarity with earlier series entries may add context, but the game’s central appeal is its two-hero adventure.
Rank #2
- MLB The Show 26 Full Game on PlayStation 5
- Includes 5 The Show Packs
- NEW Road to Cooperstown & Expanded Amateur Years Career
- Build your ultimate fantasy team with a new Red Diamond rarity tier and World Baseball Classic player cards featuring elite game-changing players

Role-playing games
4. Baldur’s Gate 3
Best for: A sprawling role-playing game built around player choice and a Dungeons & Dragons-style ruleset. GameSpot notes that its mechanics are complex, so it suits players willing to learn systems and consider consequences rather than those seeking a simple, fast-paced action game. Its choice-rich structure is the draw; it is not the easiest entry point for someone who dislikes tactical rules.

Best for: A fantasy RPG with turn-based combat and a story centered on storytelling. GameSpot awarded it a 10/10 in its own review; that is the outlet’s assessment, not a universal score. Choose it if you enjoy deliberate battles and a substantial narrative more than real-time action.
6. Hades II
Best for: Fast, repeatable action for players who enjoy learning through successive attempts. Metacritic’s current-year PS5 listing shows a 94 Metascore and an April 14, 2026 release date; the score is a critic-aggregate snapshot and can change, not a player rating or an all-time PS5 ranking. The loop and challenge are central to its appeal, so it is less suitable if you want a linear story with no repeated runs.
Rank #3
- ONLY AT AMAZON - SPECIALIST EDITION
- EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
- A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
- SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.
Horror and high-pressure action
7. Resident Evil 4
Best for: Action-horror with a modern reworking of the original game. GameSpot describes it as a remake, making it a useful choice for players who want a tightly directed mix of combat and horror rather than an open-ended RPG. The tone and tension are part of the experience; consider that before choosing it for someone seeking a light adventure.
8. Returnal
Best for: Players who want a demanding roguelite shooter and are comfortable repeating attempts while improving. GameSpot cautions that its difficulty and structure will not suit everyone. Pick it for intense solo action, not for a gentle introduction to shooters or a relaxed co-op session.
What the newer releases tell you about availability
Sony’s US catalog lists SAROS, Marathon and 007 First Light with 2026 release dates. Sony describes SAROS as a sci-fi shooter set on Carcosa, Marathon as competitive resource extraction on Tau Ceti IV, and 007 First Light as a James Bond origin story from the developer of Hitman. These descriptions and dates are useful for deciding what to watch, but they do not by themselves establish current regional availability. Check each title’s live store page before treating it as a game to play today.

Why this is a starting list, not a universal ranking
GameSpot’s July 20, 2026 guide says more than 92 million PS5 units had been sold; that figure is attributed to GameSpot and should not be read as a current audited Sony disclosure. The scale and range of the PS5 library make a single genre-based ranking especially limiting. TechRadar’s recommendations draw on expert PS5 game reviews and include both PS5-specific and cross-platform games, another reminder that platform presence and exclusivity are different things.
Use this list as a shortlist: match a game to the kind of play you want, then verify the edition and availability in your region. A score, a month’s download chart and an editor’s recommendation each provide a different signal, not a final verdict for every player.
