There is no official ranking of the best Star Wars games: the answer depends on whether you value role-playing, starfighter combat, squad tactics, racing, or a great adventure. This list weighs narrative and gameplay distinctiveness most heavily, then considers historical influence, how approachable each game is now, and the variety it brings to the franchise. It ranks games across genres rather than pretending that one kind of play can be measured against another.

Knights of the Old Republic is a leading choice, not a settled consensus. Den of Geek put it first in its 2019 list, while High Ground Gaming selected Jedi: Fallen Order in a list updated in 2023. This ranking is an editorial judgment, not an official verdict. The list spans eras and platforms; availability of older games can vary by system and region.

The 25 best Star Wars games

  1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

A role-playing adventure built around character choices and a story set far from the Skywalker films. Its combination of a substantial narrative and player agency makes it the strongest all-around pick for this list. Start here if you want a story-led game rather than a reflex-driven action or flight game.

  2. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

A single-player action-adventure that gives the franchise a focused, character-driven journey. It offers a more contemporary action-game entry point than the older RPGs, while keeping the emphasis on exploration and story. High Ground Gaming named it its top pick in a list last updated October 17, 2023.

    • STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
    • STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
    • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
  3. Star Wars: TIE Fighter

A standout for players who want to pilot a starfighter, with the unusual perspective of serving the Empire. Its place here reflects the distinct appeal of its flight-combat focus, not a claim that it is the easiest classic to run on a modern setup.

  4. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

A top choice for cinematic starfighter missions. Where TIE Fighter appeals to players drawn to a deeper flight-combat identity, Rogue Leader is the pick for a more direct, action-forward tour through iconic battles.

  5. Star Wars: Republic Commando

A squad-focused shooter whose identity comes from directing a team, not simply aiming at enemies. Pick it for tactical combat and the feeling of operating as part of a unit rather than for open-ended role-playing.

  6. Star Wars: Dark Forces

An important shooter entry in the franchise’s game history. Its appeal is as much the shift toward first-person action in the Star Wars universe as its place in the broader lineage of licensed games.

  7. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

A second role-playing entry for players who want to stay with the Old Republic setting. It belongs on a list that recognizes how much room Star Wars games have found for stories beyond the films.

    • Experience an original scoundrel story. Live the high-stakes lifestyle of an outlaw. Turn any situation to your advantage with Nix by your side: fight with your blaster, overcome enemies with stealth and gadgets, or find the right moments to distract enemies and gain the upper hand.
    • Embark on high-stakes missions. Take on high-risk, high-reward missions from the galaxy’s crime syndicates. Steal valuable goods, infiltrate secret locations, and outwit enemies as one of the galaxy’s most wanted. Every choice you make influences your ever-changing reputation.
    • Jump into the pilot seat. Pilot your ship, the Trailblazer, as you engage in thrilling dogfights with the Empire and other foes. Find the right opportunities to chase, evade, and attack to get the upper hand.
  8. Star Wars: Episode I Racer

The natural recommendation for racing fans. Rather than adapting a lightsaber duel or space battle, it turns podracing into the whole point—and earns its position through that focused genre identity.

  9. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga

A playful adaptation that makes the films accessible through LEGO’s humor and approachable action. It is a strong choice for families, casual players, or anyone who wants a lighter tone than the franchise’s combat-heavy games.

  10. Super Star Wars

A 1992-era action game that brings the original trilogy’s world into a demanding side-scrolling format. Its value on this list is its place among the franchise’s early console adaptations and its distinctly old-school style.

  11. Star Wars: Battlefront II

A large-scale battle game for players who want to fight as part of a wider conflict instead of following one hero’s tightly scripted story. Check which release and platform you mean before seeking it out; games sharing this title are not interchangeable.

  12. Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

A lightsaber-and-shooter hybrid that offers a different kind of Jedi fantasy from a modern action-adventure. It is a good fit for players interested in the franchise’s older PC-era action games.

  13. Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

A follow-up built around the Jedi Knight action formula. Its place reflects the appeal of choosing a lightsaber-centered game from an era when Star Wars titles ranged well beyond film adaptations.

  14. Star Wars: Empire at War

A strategy option for players who would rather think about the conflict at a broader scale than control a single character or vehicle. It adds an important genre to a list otherwise dominated by action and adventure.

  15. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

An action game centered on an unusually powerful take on Force abilities. It is worth considering if spectacle and force-driven combat matter more to you than role-playing depth or a simulation-minded approach.

  16. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

A broad, comic retelling of the nine main saga films. Choose it for accessible, lighthearted play and a sweeping tour of the movies, rather than for a serious or canon-defining story experience.

  17. Star Wars: X-Wing

An early flight-combat entry that helped establish how naturally Star Wars lends itself to piloting games. It is a historical pick for players who want to explore the roots of the franchise’s space-simulation tradition.

  18. Star Wars: Battlefront

  19. Star Wars: The Old Republic

A massively multiplayer role-playing game that extends the Old Republic setting into an online format. Its inclusion recognizes that Star Wars games have served players seeking ongoing worlds as well as self-contained campaigns; current service details should be checked before choosing it.

  20. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

A 1990s-era adventure that reflects the franchise’s willingness to build games around stories and characters outside the core film heroes. It is most compelling to players interested in that period of Star Wars history.

  21. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

The original console entry in the flight-combat series. It belongs alongside Rogue Leader for players who want vehicle action to take precedence over ground combat or character progression.

  22. Star Wars: Republic Heroes

A lighter action-adventure option tied to the animated side of the franchise. It offers a different tone from the film-centered epics and is best approached as a more casual, character-based pick.

  23. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2002)

An action game drawing on the prequel-era conflict. It earns a place for expanding the range of settings and styles represented in Star Wars games, though a specific modern way to play depends on platform availability.

  24. Star Wars Pinball

A pinball-focused take on the universe that proves a Star Wars game does not need blasters or a lightsaber. It is the genre pick for players after short, score-chasing sessions rather than a campaign.

  25. Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds

A strategy game for players who want to manage forces and confrontations from a higher vantage point. Its inclusion gives the list another alternative to action games and character-led storytelling.

Which Star Wars game should you play first?

Choose by the kind of play you want, not by treating the ranking as a universal answer:

  • For a story with role-playing choices: start with Knights of the Old Republic.
  • For a modern, single-player action-adventure: consider Jedi: Fallen Order.
  • For squad tactics: try Republic Commando.
  • For starfighter combat: choose TIE Fighter or Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader.
  • For racing: go with Episode I Racer.
  • For accessible, family-friendly humor: try a LEGO Star Wars game.

Why the ranking is not a definitive consensus

Different lists reflect different priorities and dates. Den of Geek’s 2019 ranking placed Knights of the Old Republic first. High Ground Gaming’s list, originally published in 2021 and marked updated October 17, 2023, selected Jedi: Fallen Order. Neither is an official franchise ranking; the contrast shows why story, genre, historical importance, and present-day accessibility need to be weighed openly.

What to check before buying or revisiting an older game

A historic ranking is not a current store catalog. Legacy games can be tied to obsolete hardware, specific rereleases, or online services whose status changes. Confirm the exact title, platform, edition, and regional listing before purchasing, and do not assume that multiplayer functions or an old retail copy remain usable on current systems.

For a current example, Electronic Arts describes Jedi: Survivor as a single-player third-person action-adventure released April 28, 2023, developed by Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. EA lists PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S on its official game page, with storefront links that include EA app, Steam, Epic, PlayStation, and Xbox. Store listings and regional availability can change. The fact that EA’s current Star Wars catalog also features newer titles such as Star Wars Zero Company is another reason to treat older rankings as dated snapshots, not complete current catalogs.
