The Ascent is The Motley Fool’s personal-finance review brand, not a video-game review site. It covers financial products such as credit cards, bank accounts, CDs, mortgages, brokerage accounts, insurance, and personal loans. Its current review methodology emphasizes clear terms, competitive fees, and trust and transparency.

What does The Ascent review?

The Ascent launched in 2018 as a personal-finance brand associated with The Motley Fool. Its original announcement described plans to review credit cards, savings accounts, mortgages, discount brokers, and insurance. The Motley Fool’s current About page describes Motley Fool Money’s product-review coverage as including credit cards, banking, brokerage firms, mortgages, and personal loans. Together, these sources identify a financial-services focus; they do not make The Ascent a video-game review outlet.

Across the sources, the product areas include:

  • Credit cards
  • Bank accounts and CDs
  • Mortgages
  • Brokerage accounts and firms
  • Insurance
  • Personal loans

The brand is distinct in purpose from The Motley Fool’s investing-focused editorial coverage: The Ascent’s role is to help readers assess consumer financial products and make informed decisions.

How does The Ascent rate financial products?

Motley Fool Money’s current methodology identifies three broad rating priorities: clarity and simplicity of an offer, competitive fees, and trust and transparency. Those are useful lenses for reading a review: check whether the terms are understandable, whether the costs make sense alongside the features, and whether the provider communicates clearly.

The methodology says the review model and criteria vary by product category. A credit-card rating, for example, should not be assumed to use the same scorecard or weighting as a mortgage or brokerage review. The source does not establish a single universal formula for every category.

At launch, Motley Fool contributor Brendan Byrnes described an aim of thorough reviews and first-person reviews where possible. That 2018 statement describes the original intention, not proof that any particular current review involved hands-on testing.

Does advertising affect The Ascent’s ratings?

Motley Fool Money’s methodology says products are reviewed at least quarterly. It also states: “We do not let advertising deals influence our product ratings or which products we recommend or list on page.” This is the publisher’s stated policy; the cited methodology does not establish that the policy has been independently audited.

Compensation and ratings are therefore presented by the publisher as separate. Readers can still judge an individual review on the evidence and criteria it explains, including the product’s terms, fees, and stated limitations.

What The Ascent’s reviews mean for readers

The coverage can help readers compare financial-services products, but the right choice depends on the product category and the reader’s own circumstances. Use the category-specific criteria in a review rather than treating its rating as a universal recommendation. The sources establish the brand’s review subjects and stated methodology; they do not verify the availability or terms of any particular provider’s affiliate program.
