Yes. In Monster Hunter: World, Affinity is the percentage chance for an applicable attack to land as a critical hit when its value is positive. Affinity sets the chance, not the size of the damage bonus: a standard critical hit adds 25% to weapon Attack Value, while negative Affinity can cause a feeble hit that subtracts 25%.
What does Affinity mean?
Affinity is the game’s critical-hit probability. For example, 10% Affinity means a 10% chance for an applicable attack to be critical; it does not mean that every hit deals 10% more damage. The base critical modifier is +25% to weapon Attack Value. PC Gamer’s Monster Hunter: World weapons guide gives the 10% example and the base modifier; Kiranico’s damage reference describes the modifier in terms of Attack Value.
What happens with negative Affinity?
Negative Affinity is the chance of a feeble hit, which deals less physical damage than a normal hit. At -20% Affinity, the chance is 20%; the base feeble-hit modifier is -25% to weapon Attack Value. This is a chance on applicable hits, not a guaranteed penalty to every attack. Kiranico describes the feeble-hit probability and modifier, and PC Gamer’s guide gives the same -20% example.
Does Affinity affect elemental damage?
Ordinary critical hits affect physical damage, not the elemental damage component. Elemental damage is calculated separately under the ordinary rules. The exception is the Elemental Crit skill, which allows critical hits to affect elemental damage; check the skill’s in-game description for its current effect. Kiranico’s damage reference separates physical and elemental factors, while PC Gamer’s guide identifies Elemental Crit as the exception.

How can you change Affinity?
Affinity can vary with weapon choice and skills. Guides for Monster Hunter: World list Critical Eye, Weakness Exploit, Agitator, Maximum Might, Attack Boost and Critical Draw among examples of skills associated with Affinity or raw-damage setups. Critical Boost increases the damage dealt by critical hits rather than the chance to trigger them. Exact skill effects can depend on game version and skill level, so use the skill description in your game for current values. See PC Gamer’s guide and PowerPyx’s Affinity overview for examples.
How should you compare weapons?
Higher Affinity alone does not prove that one weapon will deal more damage overall. Damage depends on several inputs, including attack value, attack motion, sharpness, weapon adjustment, monster-part hitzone, elemental value and the target’s elemental weakness, as well as critical hits. Compare the weapons in the context of the attacks and monster parts you actually use; Kiranico’s damage calculation reference outlines these separate factors.

How the terminology fits the series
Capcom’s Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate manual describes Affinity as related to critical-hit rate, with positive values increasing the chance of dealing more damage and negative values increasing the chance of dealing less. That manual supports the series terminology, not the specific World modifiers above. Read Capcom’s equipment-status explanation.
