If you like Pokémon’s creature-collecting loop, the best alternatives depend on what you want to keep: familiar monster-catching and trainer battles, unusual ways to build a team, a deeper story, or a more open-ended adventure. These seven games cover those different tastes, from classic-style monster tamers to survival and exploration hybrids. This is a preference-based guide, not an objective ranking.

Platform support and local editions vary. Check the current storefront for your region before buying; the cited pages confirm Nintendo Switch for several picks, but do not establish current availability everywhere.
Best games like Pokémon, by play style
1. Coromon: for a familiar monster-taming loop
TRAGsoft’s official Coromon page lists more than 120 Coromon and PC, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad, and Android availability. Nintendo UK describes taming Coromon and taking on wildlife, trainers, and bosses. It also mentions randomizer and Nuzlocke modes, giving players options for a less predictable or self-imposed challenge. Choose it if you want the recognizable rhythm of collecting creatures and battling through an RPG, with extra modes to revisit the adventure differently.
2. Nexomon: Extinction: for classic monster-catching structure
Nintendo UK’s listing for Nexomon: Extinction describes a new story and over 300 Nexomon. That broad collection makes it a natural option if the appeal of Pokémon for you is finding and building a roster of creatures within a traditional monster-catching adventure. The listing identifies a Nintendo Switch game-card edition; check your regional store for the edition and availability that apply to you.

3. Cassette Beasts: for recording and fusing creatures
Cassette Beasts’ official page describes recording beasts and battling with them, then combining two monster forms through a fusion system. That makes team-building feel distinct from simply collecting creatures and choosing their moves: experimentation with combinations is central to the pitch. The official page lists Steam, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch availability.
Do not confuse the original game with its follow-up: the separate Cassette Beasts 2002 page advertises 250+ beasts for Cassette Beasts 2002, not the original Cassette Beasts.

4. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition: for story and turn-based battles
Bandai Namco describes Complete Edition as combining the storylines of Cyber Sleuth and Hacker’s Memory, with turn-based battles and many Digimon to collect. It is the pick here for someone who wants creature collecting paired with a story-forward RPG structure. Bandai Namco lists Nintendo Switch and Steam; Nintendo UK also has a Switch listing.
5. Temtem: for an online, competitive slant
Editorial guides from GamesRadar+ and Nintendo Life position Temtem as an online creature-collecting game with a more competitive emphasis. Consider it if you want a social or matchup-focused take on the genre rather than a purely solo adventure. Online games can change their platform support and service status, so confirm both in the current store or official game channels before purchasing.

6. Monster Sanctuary: for creature teams and side-scrolling exploration
GamesRadar+ describes Monster Sanctuary as combining monster teams with side-scrolling exploration. It suits players who want to move through a world and explore its spaces as well as collect creatures and use them in a team. Its exploration structure makes it a hybrid, rather than a direct substitute for a conventional Pokémon-style RPG.
7. Palworld: for survival and open-world systems
GamesRadar+ characterizes Palworld as an open-world survival game in which creatures can assist with combat, crafting, resource gathering, and work around a base. That makes it a much bigger departure from Pokémon’s familiar RPG loop: creature companions are part of survival and production systems, not just a battle roster. Choose it if that broader sandbox is appealing, and check current platform and service details before buying.

How to choose your next creature-collecting game
- Want the most familiar structure? Start with Coromon or Nexomon: Extinction, whose official listings emphasize taming or catching creatures and taking them into battles or a story.
- Want collecting to work differently? Try Cassette Beasts for recording and fusion, or Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – Complete Edition for its paired storylines and turn-based battles.
- Want more than a traditional RPG loop? Temtem emphasizes online and competitive play; Monster Sanctuary pairs teams with side-scrolling exploration; Palworld folds creatures into open-world survival.
- Need a specific platform or format? Verify the exact game, edition, region, and storefront. A platform listing does not by itself establish a physical edition, local stock, or current service status.
