There is no verified, objectively strongest late-game team for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. A more dependable approach is to build around complementary roles—different damage profiles, useful type coverage, and at least one sturdier option—then adjust a slot to suit the fight. Here’s an adaptable starter-based core, with alternatives for each starter and notes on what changes in post-game play.
What makes a late-game team work in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses real-time battles: trainers and Pokémon move around, and players direct their Pokémon’s moves. That makes positioning and practical move use part of team building, rather than just choosing six Pokémon that look strong on a turn-based type chart. Mega Evolution temporarily changes a Pokémon’s appearance and capabilities and can change its type. Nintendo’s game overview describes these mechanics.
Use these jobs as a checklist, not a rigid formula. A Pokémon can fill more than one role, and the best choice for a particular slot depends on what you can access and which battles are giving you trouble.
- Starter anchor: Keep your chosen starter if it is working for you; the examples below treat it as the team’s familiar foundation.
- Physical and special damage: Carry more than one damage profile so that the team is not reliant on a single kind of attacker.
- Offensive coverage: Include moves and Pokémon that can answer the matchups you expect, rather than depending entirely on neutral damage.
- Durability or support: A sturdier, support-oriented member gives you another option when charging straight into an unfavorable matchup is a poor plan.
- Mega Evolution, when available: Treat a Mega as an option for the battles where its changed capabilities help, not as a reason to neglect the rest of the team.
- One flexible slot: Rotate a member when a boss, repeated weakness, or access restriction exposes a gap.
One late-game team guide recommends clear roles, reliable STAB and coverage moves, and a bulky or support option alongside attackers; it also advises changing the team when a repeated weakness or boss pattern reveals a problem. This is guide-level advice, not an official tier list or evidence for one winning lineup. In real-time fights, move speed and range can also affect whether an attack is practical to land; The Click’s team guide highlights those considerations.

A starter-centered example team
A March 2026 story-team guide offers a six-Pokémon framework built around your starter, with Excadrill, Gardevoir, Lucario, a Fire- or Water-type attacker to complement the starter, and an Electric option such as Ampharos. Think of it as an accessible starting core to adapt—not a tested ranking of the strongest post-game teams. The guide says the story does not require perfect stats. Its starter-specific examples are:
| Starter choice | Example six |
|---|---|
| Totodile | Feraligatr, Excadrill, Gardevoir, Lucario, Charizard, Ampharos |
| Tepig | Emboar, Excadrill, Gardevoir, Lucario, Gyarados, Ampharos |
| Chikorita | Meganium, Excadrill, Gardevoir, Lucario, Charizard, and a Water attacker such as Gyarados |
The guide describes all three starters as viable and says their final forms receive Mega Evolutions. Check your current game progression and access before planning around a specific Pokémon or Mega; the examples do not establish that every listed option is immediately available to every player. The March 2026 story-team guide presents these lineups as a baseline to adjust, rather than a controlled late-game comparison.

How to adjust the example for your fights
If you keep running into the same weakness
Identify the attacks or opponents that repeatedly cause trouble, then rotate the flexible slot for a Pokémon or move that addresses that matchup. Avoid replacing a member just because another species appears powerful in isolation: the change should improve coverage or add a needed role without leaving another gap.
If a boss is hard to hit
Consider whether your attacks are practical in the real-time fight, not only whether their types look favorable. A move that is difficult to connect with may be less useful in that encounter than a more reliable option. The available guides emphasize role balance and move practicality, but they do not provide controlled move-by-move testing.

If you want a different balance of types
A separate team-building guide illustrates another possible mix: Meganium, Arcanine, Jolteon, Lucario, Gyarados, and Gardevoir. It is an example of complementary coverage, not an official recommendation or proof of superiority over the starter-centered core. The guide’s suggested team is best treated as inspiration for a roster you can adapt.

Do not assume that a team built for the story is automatically a finished answer for post-game content. Nintendo describes Hyperspace Lumiose as a post-main-game adventure, where Pokémon can have hyperspace levels that push total levels beyond the ordinary level 100 limit. That is a distinct progression context, so use the story lineup as a foundation and reassess it for the battles and access you encounter there. Nintendo’s overview of the game and Hyperspace Lumiose sets out that distinction.

Mega access also depends on progression. The Pokémon Company’s official updates say ranked Z-A Battle Club play can earn Mega Stones for Sceptile, Blaziken, and Swampert, which players can encounter in the Mega Dimension adventure. That makes these Megas relevant options for players pursuing the associated content—not guaranteed choices for every team from the start. See The Pokémon Company’s official updates; its Mega Dimension and ranked Mega Stone announcements are dated December 9–10, 2025.
Quick Recap
Use a simple test before locking in six
- List the fights you are preparing for. Separate story progression from Hyperspace Lumiose or other post-game goals.
- Check the roster’s roles. Make sure you have more than one damage profile and at least one member that can offer durability or support.
- Look for repeated coverage gaps. If a particular opponent or weakness keeps forcing bad matchups, use the flexible slot to address it.
- Consider real-time execution. Favor moves that are practical to use and land in the encounter, not just appealing on paper.
- Verify access for your progression. Confirm that you can obtain the Pokémon and Mega Stone you plan to use before building the team around them.
- Change one slot when a clear problem appears. A focused swap makes it easier to tell whether the adjustment helped.
