The distinction matters: preserving old games does not necessarily require remaking them, but players reasonably expect them to launch and run reliably on the systems they are sold for.
What EA released in 2025
For The Sims’ 25th anniversary, EA launched The Sims: Legacy Collection and The Sims 2: Legacy Collection globally on January 31, 2025. The PC collections were offered through the EA app, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and EA said they were designed for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The first collection includes the original game and seven listed expansions; the second includes The Sims 2 with its listed expansions and stuff packs. EA’s anniversary announcement gives the launch details.

These are digital products, not boxed editions: EA’s current product page describes the purchase as a license to access digital content and lists an internet connection, an EA Account, EA app installation, and single-use product-code registration among the requirements. Store prices and availability can vary by region and change over time, so the historical launch prices are not a guide to what a collection costs now.
Why the release drew criticism
In a February 7, 2025 opinion article, Ars Technica’s Samuel Axon characterized the Steam releases as the original games with minor patches rather than remasters. He summarized player reports on forums and Reddit of games failing to launch, crashing after launch, or displaying serious graphics problems, and noted that patches were still being issued. He also criticized the absence of Steam Cloud support and achievements. Those are reports and judgments presented by Axon, not an independent technical audit or a verified measure of how many buyers were affected. Read Axon’s account at Ars Technica.

His argument is more specific than “old games should be remade.” Axon said he values preserving original assets; his standard is that a release sold for current computers should work dependably and include basic platform support. That separates two questions that are often blurred together: whether a game has been visually remade, and whether the version on sale is reliable and convenient to use today.
Preservation is not the same as modernization
A faithful re-release can retain the original art and design while still addressing compatibility, stability, and platform features. Conversely, a remaster may add upgraded visuals or other changes without proving that every engineering issue is solved. The Sims criticism concerns the experience of running and supporting these collections, not simply the absence of new graphics.
Cloud saves and achievements still take work
Axon contrasted the Sims collections with EA’s Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, which offered a unified binary, higher-resolution sprites and textures, quality-of-life improvements, and achievements. That comparison illustrates a difference in feature scope and apparent investment; it does not establish that the two projects had identical technical requirements.

Axon also said he spoke with two developers who had published games on Steam. As he summarized their comments, cloud saves and achievements can demand more engineering than players assume, particularly when save conflicts and protecting player data are involved. That is a useful qualification: Steam Cloud is not necessarily a checkbox. It does not, however, erase the central expectation that a publisher should explain what a release supports and keep addressing significant launch problems.
What this says—and does not say—about big publishers
The Sims re-release offers a concrete example of a gap between the act of selling a legacy game and the care players may expect from its return. For a single-player title, “available again” is only part of the job. Buyers also care whether it runs on the advertised systems, whether familiar platform conveniences are present, and whether post-launch support responds to problems. Axon’s article makes that case through one EA release and his account of player feedback; it is not evidence that every large publisher handles legacy games this way.
The case is also not a verdict that every re-release must be a full remaster. A useful way to assess one is to ask what it promises on several separate fronts:
Rank #3
- New Seamless, Open Neighborhood—Explore the neighborhood freely
- New Create A Sim—Create any Sim you can imagine
- New Realistic Personalities—Every Sim is a unique person, with a distinct personality
- New Unlimited Customization—Everyone can customize everything
- The freedom of The Sims 3 will inspire you with endless possibilities and amuse you with unexpected moments of surprise and mischief
- Compatibility and reliability: Does it launch and operate on the operating systems named by the publisher?
- Preservation: Does it retain original assets, or substantially alter them?
- Platform support: Are features such as cloud saves and achievements included, and are limitations clear?
- Content: What original game content and expansions are bundled?
- Ongoing support: Does the publisher continue patching the release after launch?
Those questions make it easier to distinguish a deliberately faithful edition from a release that is simply under-supported. They also avoid treating graphical upgrades as the only meaningful measure of care.

EA’s more recent franchise statements provide context, but they do not settle the quality of the 2025 collections. In a January 9, 2026 update, EA said, “We are committed to single-player life simulation experiences.” The company said single-player PC and console games would remain part of The Sims’ future, with more than half of its global development team dedicated to The Sims 4 and “the next evolution.” Those are EA’s stated commitments and staffing allocation, not a guarantee of a particular game, launch date, or feature set. EA’s update outlines its position.
EA also described Project Rene as a social, collaborative, mobile-first life-simulation game, separate from The Sims 4 and from any future deep single-player simulation experience. On EA’s description, Project Rene is not the next deep single-player Sims game; the company has not used that statement to promise a release date or define the feature set of the future single-player experience.

The Sims 4 as a continuing foundation
In prepared remarks for FY25 Q2, EA described a strategy of moving beyond linear, sequential releases. It said The Sims 4 would serve as a foundation where players could continue engaging with content they had collected and created over the prior decade, alongside a range of experiences including deep simulation, cozy, social and collaborative, and mobile narrative games. This is EA’s account of its strategy, not proof that the model is better for players or that every type of Sims experience will receive equal support. EA’s FY25 Q2 prepared remarks provide the earlier strategy context.
Does the Legacy Collection work on Windows 11, and is it a remaster?
EA says the collections were designed for Windows 10 and 11. That answers the official compatibility target, not whether every player’s installation will be trouble-free; Axon’s February 2025 article reported player complaints about launch, crashes, and graphics. The available evidence does not establish a current failure rate or confirm how common those problems remain.
Axon described the 2025 releases as the original games with minor patches, rather than remasters. The collections bring the games and substantial pack content back to sale, but that should not be confused with the more extensive visual and feature work described for Command & Conquer Remastered Collection.
