If The Witcher 3 crashes on PC, start by noting when it happens, updating an older game version, and verifying the game files. Then test one change at a time—especially DirectX mode and mods—before trying a clean installation. No single fix applies to every crash, so match the steps below to whether the game fails at launch, while loading a save, or during play.
Start by identifying the crash
Before changing settings, record the information CD PROJEKT RED requests in its PC technical-support resources and launch issue form:
- Storefront or edition, displayed game version, and Windows version.
- GPU model and driver version.
- Whether the game is running in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12.
- Whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands.
- When the crash occurs and the steps that reproduce it.
The publisher’s form says to update the game if the problem occurred on an older version. Its support page currently includes a Patch 5.01 link, while the form offers version choices including 5.01 (Latest), 5.0, 4.04, and 1.32. These labels can change; check the version shown for your own installation rather than assuming a particular build is still the latest.
Try the low-risk checks first
- Update the game. Use the update option in your storefront and check the displayed version afterward.
- Verify the installed files. In Steam, GOG, Epic, Battle.net, or another launcher, open the game’s management or properties menu and use its file verification or repair option. The exact label and menu path depend on the storefront. CD PROJEKT RED links file-verification guidance from its launch and crash support areas.
- Check the GPU driver. Follow CD PROJEKT RED’s driver-update guidance for your graphics card. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites. The publisher also lists a separate clean-driver-install resource; reserve that more involved step for when simpler checks fail or its guidance calls for it.
- Temporarily disable mods, trainers, and console commands. Test the game without them, then note whether the crash changes. Their presence is useful diagnostic context, but it does not by itself establish that a particular modification caused the problem.
Choose a next test by crash timing
The game crashes on startup
Update the game, verify its files, and check the GPU driver first. If the launcher offers a DirectX 11/12 choice, test the other mode and change no other setting during that test. CD PROJEKT RED identifies DirectX 12 as the default and asks players to report whether they use DirectX 11 or 12. Switching APIs is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix, and the reviewed support information does not establish one mode as universally more stable.

The game crashes while loading a save
If the crash occurs after loading a save with HairWorks enabled in DirectX 11, check that the game has the relevant update. On June 6, 2024, CD PROJEKT RED announced a PC hotfix that “fixes the issue where turning on HairWorks on DirectX 11 crashed the game after loading a save.” That specific fix addresses that combination; it should not be treated as an explanation for unrelated crashes.
The game crashes during play
Verify the game files, check the GPU driver, and test without mods or trainers. If the crash appears tied to one DirectX mode, compare it with the other option if available, changing one variable at a time. Record where and how the crash occurs so you can give support a reproducible description.

Use system requirements as context, not a diagnosis
Steam’s listing for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered currently shows the following requirements. They are storefront specifications for that listing, not proof that hardware is the cause of a crash; confirm the edition and version installed on your PC.

When to try a clean installation
A clean game installation is more disruptive than verifying files or checking drivers, so leave it until those simpler checks fail or CD PROJEKT RED’s instructions indicate it. Follow the publisher’s clean-install guidance rather than deleting saves or making registry edits without specific authoritative instructions.

If the crash continues, submit a support request through the publisher’s issue form. Include the game version, storefront, DirectX mode, mod or trainer status, and a concise sequence of steps that reproduces the crash. The form also explains how to generate and attach a DxDiag report, which gives support system information relevant to diagnosis.
