The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has earned exceptionally strong critical reception, especially for its writing, side stories, and richly realized world. Whether it is the right version for you depends on your platform and edition: the original game, Complete Edition, and the recently reported remaster are not interchangeable review subjects, and the remaster’s early score was based on a small sample.
How strong are The Witcher 3 reviews?
Metacritic’s all-platform page for the original The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released May 19, 2015, displayed a 92/100 Metascore from 79 critic reviews and a 9.1/10 user score from 19,910 ratings when accessed in 2026. Metacritic labels the critic reception “Universal Acclaim.” These are live-page snapshots, not permanent scores; platform-specific results differ, so the all-platform figure should not be read as the score for every release or port. Metacritic: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
What critics praise—and what the scale demands
PC Gamer’s 2015 PC review highlights the writing, side stories, environmental world-building, and melancholy atmosphere. Its account emphasizes that the game rewards curiosity and unhurried exploration, while its size can draw players away from the main objective. That is one critic’s reading of the experience, not a guarantee that every player will enjoy its pace. PC Gamer’s 2015 PC review.
“Its writing isn’t perfect—it still bears some of the familiar trappings of being a video game—but it almost always rewards curiosity, big time.”

The practical trade-off is breadth: this is a large, story-led fantasy RPG, not a tightly focused action game. If you enjoy investigating optional quests and following narrative threads at your own pace, the qualities critics single out are central strengths. If you mainly want to pursue the main plot quickly, the abundance of diversions may feel like a distraction.
Which release are the reviews about?
Original game
The 92 Metascore and 9.1 user score above refer to Metacritic’s all-platform page for the original game. Individual platform results are distinct, and they should be checked on the relevant platform page rather than inferred from the all-platform figure.
Complete Edition
Metacritic describes the Complete Edition as containing the base game, all 16 DLC packs, and both major expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Its aggregate concerns a particular Complete Edition release; it includes Switch reviews and criticism of that port, so it is not a platform-neutral score for every Complete Edition version. Metacritic: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition.

Remaster reported in 2026
GamesRadar’s review describes a remaster released September 29, 2026, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2. The reviewer praised changes to visuals, progression, traversal, and quest tracking, but also reported occasional slowdowns in busy PC scenes and noted a commitment to performance improvements. Those are one outlet’s observations at review time, not a cross-platform performance guarantee or a statement of current performance after subsequent patches. GamesRadar’s remaster review.

For players looking for a substantial, mature fantasy RPG built around quests and story, the reviews make a strong case. The clearest critical consensus belongs to the original game’s all-platform Metacritic snapshot; the Complete Edition is the content-rich option if you want the expansions and DLC, while the remaster has promising but preliminary coverage. Choose based on the exact platform and edition you intend to play rather than treating one version’s aggregate score as universal.

Is The Witcher 3 Complete Edition worth it?
It is the edition to consider if you want the base game together with Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine, and all 16 DLC packs. Confirm that the listing matches your platform, since edition contents do not erase platform differences in review performance or port quality.
