Geralt will return as a character, but the studio has not revealed what role he will play.
Why did CD Projekt Red choose Ciri?
The decision was intentional, not a last-minute replacement for Geralt. In the studio’s December 13, 2024 announcement, game director Sebastian Kalemba said the team had wanted Ciri as the protagonist “for the longest time” because it felt natural and because “Ciri deserves it.” He described the story’s focus this way: “In this game we want to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path.” CD Projekt Red announcement, December 13, 2024.
In a GameSpot interview published the same day, Kalemba said the studio had made the call roughly nine years earlier. He explained that Ciri had spent much of her life running; now, the story can follow her as she decides who she wants to be. That gives the new saga a protagonist whose defining choices are still unfolding.
What can Ciri’s story explore that Geralt’s could not?
Geralt enters the earlier games with a well-established personal code. Ciri, by contrast, is still working out her own principles and how she will respond to difficult situations. Xbox Wire’s December 18, 2024 interview with narrative director Philipp Weber describes this distinction: “With Ciri, we now have the opportunity to show a lot of those experiences as she finds her own code, and her own way of handling these tough things.” Xbox Wire interview, December 18, 2024.

This is a continuation of an existing character arc, not an unrelated successor taking over the series. Xbox Wire notes that Ciri’s personality and role were already developed in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. The new game gives her the lead while letting her stand as a character in her own right, rather than only as part of Geralt’s story.
How might Ciri change the story and gameplay?
Kalemba has described Ciri as “the very first witcher by choice”: she chooses the path because she enjoys it. The GameSpot interview also reports the developers’ view that her youth, agility and greater use of magic compared with Geralt give the team different material for gameplay. Those are descriptions of the developers’ plans, not confirmation of how every ability or scene will work in the finished game.

The reveal trailer offers a glimpse of the kind of moral conflict the studio wants to explore. Its village story follows Ciri intervening to save a young woman selected for sacrifice, framing the sequence as a self-contained Witcher tale told from Ciri’s perspective. But the trailer is a cinematic, pre-rendered presentation—not proof that each moment shown is a playable mechanic. CD Projekt Red says it was made with a custom Unreal Engine 5 build and game assets as a taste of the intended experience.

The studio calls The Witcher IV the start of a new saga and describes it as a single-player, open-world RPG succeeding The Witcher 3. A lead character with her own perspective gives newcomers a different way into the setting, while existing fans can follow a character they already know from the games and books.

Xbox Wire says the story takes place “a few years” after The Witcher 3. The developers say they intend to account for that game’s multiple endings and respect player choice, but have not disclosed the exact continuity details. The new saga is a new chapter, not a promise that the previous game’s outcomes will be ignored.
Will Geralt be in The Witcher IV?
Yes. CD Projekt Red has confirmed Geralt will return as a character. His place in the story remains undisclosed, so it is not established whether he will be playable, share lead duties with Ciri or appear for a particular portion of the game. Choosing Ciri as protagonist means the central perspective has changed; it does not mean Geralt has been confirmed absent.
