There isn’t one best board game for every group. For a tight two-player cooperative game, start with Sky Team; for a short landscape puzzle, try Harmonies; and for a longer, more demanding cooperative game, consider Daybreak. If you want a quick family game, Captain Flip is an accessible pick, while Arcs leads a separate aggregate of reviewers’ 2024 lists.
How these 2024 picks were selected
This list draws on two different kinds of recognition: the 2024 Spiel des Jahres jury results and Board Game of the Year’s aggregate of reviewers’ “Best of 2024” lists. A jury award, a nominee, a recommendation, and a reviewer-list ranking are not interchangeable signals, and none can establish a universal favorite.
Board Game of the Year’s 2024 leaderboard reports 464 games, 2,087 rankings, and 222 reviewers. Those figures describe that site’s aggregation, not all games released in 2024 or the preferences of all players. Its top-ranked game is Arcs.

Best for two players: Sky Team
Sky Team is a cooperative dice-placement game in which two players work as pilot and co-pilot to land an aircraft. Its defining constraint is that the players coordinate without speaking during the key decisions. The official profile lists two players, approximately 20 minutes, age 10+, and medium entry complexity; the publisher’s age indication differs at 12+. Check the edition sold in your region for its age guidance.

- One of the best board games for families, adults, teens and kids aged 10+. Perfect icebreaker game. Easy and fun for everyone! Perfect as a Thanksgiving or Christmas game
The Spiel des Jahres jury chose it as the 2024 winner. That recognition matches its narrow strength: it gives a pair a specific shared challenge rather than trying to accommodate a larger group. The official profile’s approximate price of €30 is given in that page’s context, not as a current or region-independent retail price.
Best short puzzle: Harmonies
Harmonies is a one-to-four-player landscape-building game. Players arrange terrain to create habitats that meet animal pattern requirements. The official profile gives an approximate 30-minute play time and explains the mechanics, but does not assign an entry-complexity label.
Rank #2
- AWARD-WINNING STRATEGY GAME: Spy Alley Won Mensa’s Best Mind Game, a highly sought-after award only few games ever win. Spy Alley was also named Australian Game of the Year, as well as one of the Chicago Tribune’s Top Ten Games and Family Life’s Best Learning Toy, among many others.
- HIGH REPLAYABILITY FOR ALL AGES: Like beloved classics such as Chess, Checkers, and Risk, Spy Alley was designed for Adults and Families. Players can use as much or as little strategy as they would like, making it the perfect game to revisit year after year.
- THE PERFECT HOLIDAY GIFT & GATHERING GAME: This classic strategy game is an ideal gift for teens, families, and adults. Ensure your winter break and holiday parties are filled with high-stakes fun and memory-making. Give the gift of a trusted, multi-generational classic.
- TIMELESS HIDDEN IDENTITY CLASSIC: For over 30 years, families across the globe have enjoyed the thrill of this classic game of deduction and misdirection. Master the art of suspense, intrigue, and espionage in this iconic game, enjoyed by generations.
- COINCIDENCE OR COVERUP: The game's designer, William Stephenson, shares his namesake with the legendary WWII Spymaster Sir William Stephenson, Code Name: INTREPID. This fun coincidence is what gives the game its unique personality and pays tribute to the true legacy of espionage that inspired our favorite spy James Bond and brings the thrill of a spy movie to your table.
It appears as a 2024 Spiel des Jahres recommendation rather than the main award winner, and it ranks fourth in Board Game of the Year’s reviewer-list aggregate. That makes it a useful choice if you want a compact puzzle; the two recognitions come from different selection processes.
Best longer cooperative game: Daybreak (e-Mission)
Daybreak is a cooperative climate-themed card game for one to four players. The official profile describes it as advanced and gives a 60–120-minute play time, making it the longest and most involved option among the games here with established time and complexity details.

It won the 2024 Kennerspiel des Jahres, the award category oriented toward more demanding games. The jury praised its cooperative treatment of climate change and said its projects and research ideas are based on real research projects. That is the jury’s assessment of the game, not an independent verification of each project represented in it.
Best quick group game: Captain Flip
In Captain Flip, players draw a character tile, choose to keep it or flip it, and build a pirate crew. The official profile lists two to five players, age 8+, and about 20 minutes, with low entry complexity. It was a 2024 Spiel des Jahres nominee, not the winner.

Arcs is the number-one title in Board Game of the Year’s 2024 aggregate, which combines submitted reviewer rankings. The page describes it as a tactical space-opera strategy game. This is a strong signal of presence across those lists, but the aggregate is not a jury award, a sales chart, or a survey of all board-game players.
