Co-op campaign or versus play: Sonic Superstars

More players and flexible modes: The Escapists 2

Local racing and another co-op option on PS5
PlayStation’s PS5 guide lists F1 25 as two-player local co-op and MotoGP 25 as two-player local competitive play; its description of MotoGP 25 specifically calls out local split-screen. The guide also lists LEGO Horizon Adventures as two-player local co-op. These are alternatives if your group prefers racing or action-platforming to a co-op adventure.
How to tell whether a game will work for your setup
“Multiplayer” does not necessarily mean several people can play on one console or computer. Local multiplayer, couch co-op, split-screen, and same-screen games are related terms, but they are not interchangeable: couch co-op describes playing together in the same room, while split-screen describes a display divided into separate views. Some local games instead put everyone in one shared view. Check the actual mode description rather than inferring the layout from a multiplayer label.

- Match the exact platform and edition. A feature listed for PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch, or PC may not carry over to another version. The PlayStation guide and Xbox Store’s local multiplayer collection are platform-specific discovery pages, not cross-platform compatibility lists.
- Check the player count for the mode you want. A game may support more players in one mode than another. For example, Sonic Superstars’ cited campaign supports up to four in split-screen co-op, while its Battle Mode is competitive.
- Confirm co-op versus competition. Look for whether the local mode is a shared objective, a versus match, or both; do not assume a game offers every type of multiplayer simply because it supports local play.
- Check screen layout. If everyone wants one shared view—or needs separate views—verify that the exact game mode offers it. A player count alone does not tell you how the screen is presented.
- Count controllers and check input requirements. PlayStation’s Play Together collection recommends an extra DualSense wireless controller for PS5 multiplayer. Confirm the required controllers or supported inputs for your platform and the number of people playing.
Where to browse more local games
The Xbox Store collection filtered for shared/split-screen and local co-op is a starting point for Xbox owners. Its listings include games such as Minecraft, Rocket League, Baldur’s Gate 3, A Way Out, and It Takes Two. A collection filter is useful for discovery, but it does not establish identical local support across Xbox generations or other platforms; open the chosen game’s store page and check its specific local modes.
