The game behind “The next Pokémon looks a bit like Minecraft” is Pokémon Pokopia, a Pokémon life-simulation game for Nintendo Switch 2. Its block-like look prompted the comparison, but the headline does not establish that it plays like Minecraft. In Pokopia, you play as a Ditto transformed into a human and work with Pokémon to build a welcoming town.
What is Pokémon Pokopia?
Pokémon Pokopia is a life-simulation game, not a newly announced mainline Pokémon role-playing game. The Pokémon Company describes a premise in which a human-shaped Ditto works alongside Pokémon friends to create a paradise. Nintendo’s US store describes rebuilding a desolate world with Pokémon and calls the player’s role building a new life with them “from the ground up.” Nintendo’s US product listing and The Pokémon Company’s trailer announcement provide the official descriptions.
What you do in the game
The official description highlights crafting items and furniture, customizing your surroundings, and responding to Pokémon requests. The focus presented in these materials is making a place for Pokémon and shaping its surroundings, rather than catching Pokémon as the defining activity of a mainline RPG.
Why does it look like Minecraft?
The comparison is best understood as a description of appearance: the headline evokes a block-like visual style. It is not evidence that Pokopia uses Minecraft’s technical approach or shares its gameplay systems. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company describe Pokopia as a life simulation; their materials do not establish Minecraft-style survival mechanics, unrestricted construction, or a shared genre.

The Verge used the comparison in a September 12, 2025 headline, according to a secondary summary. Because that original article is not the basis for verified design or development details here, the comparison should go no further than the visual resemblance conveyed by the headline.
How can you play with other people?
The Pokémon Company says up to four players can enjoy the same town. Nintendo’s US listing specifies these player options:
