Was the Xbox 360 Recalled in 2025? What the Records Show

No Xbox 360 recall in 2025 is substantiated by the available evidence. The relevant official records describe two separate 2007 actions: a Japanese safety notice for a racing-wheel AC adapter and Microsoft’s console warranty expansion for three-red-light failures.

No Xbox 360 recall in 2025 is substantiated by the available evidence reviewed here. The official records instead describe two separate actions from 2007: a Japanese safety notice for the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel’s AC adapter, and Microsoft’s expanded warranty coverage for certain Xbox 360 console failures. Neither should be presented as a 2025 console recall.

Was the Xbox 360 recalled last year?

With the date set to October 8, 2026, “last year” means 2025. The available evidence does not substantiate an Xbox 360 recall in 2025. That is a bounded finding, not proof that no recall occurred anywhere: the records described here document two different events in 2007.

What happened with the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel?

Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency records a safety notice that began on August 23, 2007, for the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel. The notice said a component inside the wheel could rarely overheat and emit smoke when the wheel operated with its AC adapter. The agency’s record is a Japanese safety notice about an accessory, not evidence of a console-wide recall or a 2025 action. Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan: safety notice

What the notice advised

  • Stop using the AC adapter until countermeasures were provided.
  • The wheel could be used with AA batteries or a separately sold Xbox 360 Rechargeable Battery Pack instead.
  • With either battery option, force feedback—including the wheel’s centering function—would not work.

The notice does not establish that the wheel itself can currently be serviced, or that a particular replacement adapter is safe. It should not be treated as guidance to buy or use an unverified adapter.

Was the Red Ring of Death a recall?

Microsoft’s July 5, 2007 announcement addressed Xbox 360 general hardware failures indicated by three flashing red lights. The company expanded coverage for those failures to three years from the date of purchase and said it would reimburse owners who had already paid repair costs for that error. This was a warranty-policy expansion and repair-and-reimbursement response, not automatically a recall. Microsoft: “Microsoft Expands Xbox 360 Warranty Coverage,” July 5, 2007

Microsoft’s announcement also reported a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge for anticipated costs under its existing and enhanced Xbox 360 policies for the quarter ended June 30, 2007. That was the company’s stated accounting charge, not a count of affected consoles or a failure-rate estimate.

How the two 2007 events differ

Event Affected item Issue Action described
Japanese safety notice, effective August 23, 2007 Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel accessory A component could rarely overheat and emit smoke when using the AC adapter Stop using the AC adapter pending countermeasures; battery operation was possible without force feedback
Microsoft warranty announcement, July 5, 2007 Xbox 360 consoles with general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights Three-red-light general hardware failure Warranty coverage expanded to three years from purchase; reimbursement offered for already-paid repairs for that error

The Japanese notice specified a remedy in its own national context. It should not be recast as a universal or current Microsoft policy.

Where to check for Xbox 360 console service now

Microsoft’s current service-order guidance lists all Xbox 360 models as eligible to request service through a registered device. That does not guarantee that a particular repair or shipping option is available in every country, and the guidance does not say that the Wireless Racing Wheel is serviceable.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft device account and check whether your Xbox 360 is registered.
  2. Open the device’s service-order options and review what is offered for your market.
  3. If no suitable option appears, check local Microsoft support for current availability rather than assuming the old warranty or wheel notice still applies.
