The Talos Principle 2 is a first-person puzzle game built around increasingly complex challenges, philosophical science-fiction themes and a distinctive world to explore. Critics’ reviews discuss those elements together: the puzzles are a central attraction, while the story and presentation give them broader context. Whether it is for you depends on how much you enjoy both sides of that mix.

What is The Talos Principle 2?

Steam lists The Talos Principle 2 as released on November 2, 2023. Its store description calls it “a thought-provoking first-person puzzle experience” that expands on the first game’s philosophical themes and environments with increasingly mind-bending challenges. That is the publisher’s description; critics’ reviews offer a more varied assessment of how the puzzles, story and presentation work together. View the Steam listing.

What do reviews say about The Talos Principle 2?

Metacritic’s base-game critic page brings together reviews that address puzzle design, characterization, philosophical storytelling and presentation. Its snapshot showed 46 critic reviews on October 8, 2026; that is a count, not a score, and can change or vary by platform. The review themes point to a game whose appeal is not limited to solving each puzzle: critics also considered how the challenges fit its ideas, characters and world. See Metacritic’s critic reviews.

Puzzles and difficulty

The puzzle design is a major part of the game’s identity, with challenges described by Steam as increasingly mind-bending. The useful question for a prospective player is not simply whether the puzzles are difficult, but whether they enjoy working through puzzle mechanics while the game builds a larger science-fiction narrative around them. Metacritic’s review themes include puzzle design, but the available snapshot does not establish that every critic agreed on the same strengths or difficulty level.

Story, ideas and characters

The sequel continues the series’ interest in philosophical themes and puts characterization alongside those ideas. That makes the story a meaningful part of the experience rather than just a frame for isolated puzzles. If you mainly want a puzzle game and have little interest in philosophical science fiction or character-driven storytelling, that balance may be less compelling than it is for players looking for both.

World and presentation

Steam highlights the environments, and Metacritic’s review themes include presentation. The setting contributes to the game’s identity and gives puzzle-solving a place within a larger world to explore. Those points are part of the critical conversation, not proof that every reviewer assessed the visuals in the same way.

Is The Talos Principle 2 worth playing?

It is a strong fit for players who want substantial first-person puzzle challenges alongside philosophical science fiction, characters and an exploratory setting. Consider it less appealing if you want puzzles without much narrative framing, or a story-led game with little emphasis on solving challenges. Reviews cover both the mechanical and narrative sides, so your preference for that combination is a better guide than treating a review count as a verdict.

What is Road to Elysium, and do you need the base game?

Road to Elysium is a separate expansion, not the base game. Its Steam listing says that the base game is required to play the expansion on Steam, so it is additional content for existing owners rather than a standalone way to start the series. Check the Road to Elysium Steam listing.

In Metacritic’s PC critic snapshot captured October 8, 2026, the expansion had a 90 Metascore based on four critic reviews. That is a positive but small review set, specific to the PC critic page and that date; it should not be read as a platform-wide or permanent rating. See Metacritic’s expansion page.

How to decide between the base game and the expansion

  • New to the game: start with The Talos Principle 2; the Steam expansion listing requires the base game.
  • Already own the base game: consider Road to Elysium if you want additional content, keeping in mind that its cited critic snapshot covers only four PC reviews.
  • Choosing based on reviews: weigh your interest in puzzle variety, philosophical themes, character writing and presentation rather than relying on a changing review count or a small-sample score alone.
