How Metacritic defined the worst games of 2025
Metacritic’s year-end list, published December 12, 2025, covers games released for any platform in North America from January 1 through December 31, 2025. According to Pure Xbox’s methodology summary, a game needed at least four professional reviews to qualify; user scores were excluded. Where a title appeared on multiple platforms, the list used its lowest-scoring platform edition.

The scores below are the Metascores shown in Metacritic’s December 12, 2025 page capture, paired with the platform edition listed there. Metascores can vary by platform and change as reviews are added, so these figures describe that particular snapshot, not a permanent score for every version.

MindsEye — PS5 — 29
Metacritic describes this June release as set in a fictionalized Las Vegas and summarizes criticism of its technical problems, weak execution and lack of content. The entry reproduces Metro GameCentral’s assessment: “One of the worst video games of the modern era, that clearly isn’t finished – but just as clearly wouldn’t be worth even a moment of your time if it was.” The quote is attributed to Metro GameCentral on Metacritic’s list.

What the ranking does—and does not—tell you
It ranks critic reviews, not everyone’s experience
A Metascore aggregates professional critics’ reviews; it does not establish that every player disliked a game. User rankings can diverge from critic rankings. TechSpot’s report notes that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 had a lower Metacritic user score than MindsEye, while its critic Metascore was 67. Those scores reflect different groups and should not be treated as interchangeable measures.
Platform and timing matter
The list’s scores belong to specific editions: Spy Drops is represented by its PC score, for example, while MindsEye is represented by PS5. A title’s score on another platform may differ. The December year-end ranking is also a distinct snapshot: an earlier VGC interim list from November 16, 2025 had different positions and scores, so it should not be combined with the final-year list.
“Unforgettable” is a hook, not a measurement
The ranking identifies low critic scores and summarizes recurring complaints such as technical trouble, repetitive play, weak controls, thin content or presentation. It does not measure how memorable a game is. Whether a notorious release is unforgettable—or even the worst game someone played in 2025—is a personal judgment, separate from Metacritic’s ranking.
