BetterVR is a free, fan-made VR mod that lets you play the Wii U version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on a Windows PC through the Cemu emulator. It is not a native Nintendo VR release: you need a legal copy of the Wii U game, a working Cemu setup and an OpenXR-compatible headset. The project documents stereoscopic 6DOF rendering, hands and motion-control interactions, but also lists setup requirements and some rough edges.
What BetterVR is—and what it is not
BetterVR is a PC VR mod and hook for Breath of the Wild running in Cemu, which emulates the Wii U version of the game. It changes the game’s code rather than supplying game data, so it does not include the game itself. You must provide your own legal Wii U copy. The mod is unofficial and is not a Nintendo-supported VR mode. Digital Trends reported in 2026 that one person built the mod over five years; that is the publication’s account of its development, not an independently verified timeline.
What the mod adds
The BetterVR README documents a range of VR features. These are project-described capabilities, not independent performance or comfort test results.
- Stereo and movement: fully stereoscopic rendering, six degrees of freedom (6DOF) and room-scale support. The project says it avoids alternating-eye rendering.
- Hands and weapons: hands and arms appear in VR, with weapon use and gestures for equipping or throwing weapons.
- Motion interactions: motion controls are used for some puzzles and for starting fires.
- Optional third-person mode: the project lists this as an alternative to its first-person VR presentation.
What you need to run it
The project’s requirements combine a game and emulator setup with a Windows PC and compatible VR hardware. It does not give a universal minimum GPU specification or a device-by-device headset compatibility list.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Windows: the README says the mod does not work on Linux, including through Wine or Proton, in the configuration documented there.
- A gaming PC: the project recommends at least a recent Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 and says Cemu is more often limited by CPU performance, particularly single-threaded performance, than by the GPU.
- A legal Wii U copy of BOTW: BetterVR does not provide the game’s data.
- A working Cemu installation: the README recommends getting the game running in Cemu at 60 FPS or higher before installing the mod. Its stated tested version is Cemu 2.6.
- An OpenXR-compatible headset and suitable controllers: the README says, “It supports all OpenXR headsets, as long as the VR controllers have enough buttons.” This is the project’s own compatibility statement, not independent certification; check the current README for its latest requirements.
Configuration the README calls for
After confirming that BOTW already runs in Cemu, follow the BetterVR repository’s current setup instructions. The README’s documented configuration calls for the game’s V208 update, Vulkan rendering, VSync off, current community graphic packs, and both the BetterVR and FPS++ graphic packs enabled. It warns that the game can crash without FPS++. You also need to configure the headset’s OpenXR runtime. These details describe the repository’s documented setup and may change as the project is updated.

The README records a small chance of a black screen after exiting a menu, quirks when climbing ladders and missing comfort options. It also lists snap turning as added, so older descriptions saying snap turning is absent may no longer reflect the project documentation. Start from a working flat-screen Cemu setup and check the current project README before changing it for VR.
