Roblox requires users to complete an age check to use chat in regions where chat is available. By default, users can chat with people in their own age group and the groups directly above and below it. Roblox says this is designed to prevent children younger than 16 from communicating with adults, though age groups and feature access can vary by region, product and account settings.
Who can chat with whom by age?
Roblox’s Jan. 7, 2026 announcement describes age-group limits as the default for chat after an age check. For example, a user aged 9–12 can chat with users in that group, those younger than 9, and those aged 13–15. The groups Roblox uses are for its chat feature and may differ by region or product.
Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman and Vice President of User and Discovery Product Rajiv Bhatia said the system is “designed to prevent children younger than 16 from communicating with adults.” That is Roblox’s stated design objective, not a guarantee that every interaction is blocked. Roblox also says access depends on account settings and region. Roblox’s announcement explains the policy and rollout.
Children younger than 9
Users under 9 need parental consent to access chat. The precise options shown can depend on the child’s account settings and region.

Users aged 13 and older
Eligible age-checked users aged 13 and older may use Trusted Connections to communicate more freely with people they know, including people outside their immediate age group. Eligibility varies by age group and country. Users under 13 need parent approval for each trusted friend. Teens aged 13–17 generally cannot create a trusted-friend connection with an adult unless they use specified real-life connection methods. Roblox’s Trusted Friends guidance sets out those conditions.
How to complete an age check
Roblox lists facial age estimation and ID verification as age-check methods. Facial age estimation uses a camera-based flow; ID verification uses a government-issued photo ID and is available to users aged 13 or older.

Facial age estimation
- Sign in to Roblox and open Settings.
- Select Account info, then Age Group.
- Choose Continue with selfie and follow the on-screen prompts.
If the device you start on has no camera, Roblox says you can use a QR code to continue the process on a camera-equipped mobile device. See Roblox’s age-estimation instructions.
ID verification
Users aged 13 or older can verify with a government-issued photo ID. Roblox says eligible users who believe a facial estimate is wrong may use ID verification. In eligible cases, a parent linked to the account may update a child’s birthday. Roblox may also ask a user to repeat an age check if it detects a discrepancy with the estimated age. Its age-check guidance describes the available routes.

Standard chat and Trusted Friends are not the same
Age groups govern default access to chat; Trusted Friends is a separate connection for eligible users. Standard experience chat remains filtered. Depending on age group and region, trusted-friend features may include Party Voice or chat without filters. These features are not available under identical conditions to every account, so check the options Roblox shows for the account in question.
What Roblox says about privacy and accuracy
Roblox says images and video used for facial age estimation are deleted after secure processing. It identifies Persona as the vendor and says the vendor’s technology was tested and certified by third-party laboratories. These are Roblox’s descriptions of its process, not independent confirmation of the system as a whole.

Roblox reported that age-estimation models used for users younger than 18 had a mean absolute error of 1.4 years, attributing that result to testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. The figure is Roblox’s 2026-reported test statistic; it does not mean every individual estimate will be within 1.4 years.
Roblox also reported that more than 50% of daily active users in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands had completed the age-check process. Its Jan. 7, 2026 announcement said chat age checks had been required in those countries since early December, without specifying the year for that December.

What age limits do not guarantee
Roblox cautions that no system is perfect and that it cannot prevent all objectionable content from appearing on the platform. It says conversations, including those with trusted friends, remain proactively monitored for critical harm such as grooming. Age-based restrictions are one safeguard, not a substitute for parental controls or conversations with children about online safety.
For current account-specific instructions, consult Roblox’s age-estimation help page and Trusted Friends help page; access and options can vary by region and account settings.
