That figure is a Steam concurrency count—not sales, unique players, or the total audience across platforms. The game also drew viral attention for clips of trains behaving unpredictably, but the coverage does not quantify how widely those videos spread.
How many people played on launch day?
SteamDB recorded an all-time peak of 1,098 concurrent players for Thomas & Friends: Wonders of Sodor on March 17, 2026. The game released on Steam at 16:00:12 UTC that day. SteamDB is a third-party tracker and says it is not affiliated with Valve or Steam.
“Concurrent” means users playing on Steam at the same time. It does not count everyone who played at different times, measure sales, or include players on other platforms. Dovetail announced the game for PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, and Epic Games Store at launch; its later FAQ also lists Nintendo Switch. No cross-platform player total is established by the cited sources.
Why did the launch attract viral attention?
In its March 18, 2026 launch coverage, PC Gamer reported that clips of erratic physics were circulating online. The footage showed engines launching off the tracks or flying into the air. That explains the viral framing, but the report did not quantify views, posts, or total audience; attention to clips cannot be translated into a player count.

Other clips focused on speed. GamesRadar+ covered a player’s claim that Percy reached 127 mph in the game. That simulated speed is distinct from the reported 126 mph record set by the real steam locomotive Mallard in 1938.

Dovetail describes the game as powered by Train Sim World, using Unreal Engine and Simugraph with accessible controls. The publisher said at launch that it “blending richly detailed environments and immersive simulation technology with accessible, easy-to-learn controls.” Those are publisher descriptions, not independent gameplay testing. The chaotic clips are one part of the game’s public image; the listed modes also include structured stories and train-driving activities.
What does the launch figure say—and not say?
- It establishes a Steam peak: SteamDB’s 1,098 figure is a simultaneous-user high for that platform on launch day.
- It does not establish sales or total reach: a concurrency peak cannot be treated as copies sold, unique players, or total participation across PC and console storefronts.
- It does not measure virality: reports describe physics clips circulating, but provide no quantified reach figure.
PC Gamer’s March 18 report described the Steam review rating as Very Positive and counted 203 reviews at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a current review total or a measure of how many people played.
