Tisseur is French for a person who weaves—an English “weaver.” The feminine form is tisseuse. The word can also describe an industrialist who operates a weaving business. Because “Tisseur” is also used as a surname and as a reference to other works and characters, context matters if you encountered it as a title or name.
What does tisseur mean?
In its usual occupational sense, a tisseur is someone who makes fabric by weaving. Larousse also records a second sense: an industrialist who operates a weaving business. So the word may refer either to the person doing the weaving or, in a more specific context, to the operator of a weaving enterprise. Larousse’s definition of tisseur gives both meanings.
Le Robert likewise describes a tisseur as a worker at a loom and lists tisserand and licier as synonyms. Le Robert’s entry supports the everyday occupational meaning.
What does a weaver do?
A weaver makes cloth by crossing threads on a loom. In the Académie française’s explanation of tisser, the loom holds the lengthwise threads, called the warp (fils de chaîne), while other threads, the weft (fils de trame), pass across them at right angles. The Académie française’s entry for tisser describes this basic process.

Put simply, the loom keeps one set of threads in place while the weaver interlaces another set through it to form fabric.
What is the feminine form?
The feminine form is tisseuse. French dictionaries pair tisseur and tisseuse for the occupation, just as English uses “weaver” regardless of gender. Larousse lists both forms in its entry.

Could “Tisseur” mean something else?
Yes. Capitalized Tisseur may be a surname or a reference to a particular work or character rather than the common French noun. The French disambiguation page lists people with the surname, notes that le Tisseur is a nickname for Spider-Man, and includes La Tisseuse, a 2009 Chinese film directed by Wang Quan’an. The French Wikipedia disambiguation page shows these possibilities; the word alone does not identify which one is intended.
If you saw “Tisseur” in a game, book, film, or character name, the surrounding title or sentence is needed to determine whether it means “weaver” or names a specific person or fictional reference.
