The best Nintendo Switch 2 gift depends on what the recipient already owns and how they play: choose the console for a new player, a Pro Controller for a more traditional setup, a microSD Express card for extra game storage, or a travel case for handheld use. Check first: Switch 2 already includes a pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers, straps, a Grip, a dock, an AC adapter, and the cables needed to connect and charge it. Games are sold separately.
Start with what the recipient already has
Before buying an accessory, find out whether the person owns a Switch 2 and which add-ons are already in their setup. The console includes one left and one right Joy-Con 2, two Joy-Con 2 straps, a Joy-Con 2 Grip, a dock, an AC adapter, a USB-C charging cable, and an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. The Grip lets the included controllers be used in a more traditional controller shape; it is not the same as the separately sold Charging Grip.
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as supporting handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Its dock supports output up to 4K when connected to a compatible TV, but that does not mean every game runs at 4K. For someone who does not own a Switch 2
Give the console as the main gift
For a recipient without the system, Nintendo Switch 2 is the direct choice. It can be played on a TV, in handheld mode, or on a tabletop, and the box already supplies the basic hardware for those setups. Plan separately for a game: no game is included with the standard system listing described by Nintendo Canada.

Consider a regional bundle, not an assumed deal
Nintendo of Canada’s page lists a Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle with a game download and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. That Canada-specific listing states a $36.98 saving for the offer; it is not a universal price or guaranteed current promotion. Check the listing’s current terms and availability in the recipient’s region before purchasing.
For a player who wants a traditional controller
Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller
A Pro Controller is an optional upgrade for someone who prefers a full-size controller for TV or tabletop play. Nintendo lists HD rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo functionality, a capture button, a C Button for GameChat, a headphone jack, and mappable GL/GR buttons. It is made for Switch 2, not the original Switch. Nintendo says GameChat online features require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability varies by country. Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip
This is a different, more targeted choice for someone who wants to use Joy-Con 2 as a controller while charging them. It has mappable GL/GR buttons and includes a USB-C charging cable, but the Joy-Con 2 controllers themselves are sold separately. It does not work with original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers.
For local multiplayer or racing games
Extra Joy-Con 2 pair
The system already includes one pair, so buy another left-and-right Joy-Con 2 set when the recipient wants more controllers for local multiplayer or would enjoy a second color set. Nintendo’s extra set includes two Joy-Con 2 straps. Whether additional controllers are enough for a particular multiplayer game depends on that game; some multiplayer setups may also need additional games, systems, or accessories, and online play has separate requirements.

Joy-Con 2 Wheel set
For someone who plays racing-style games, the set of two magnetic wheel attachments gives Joy-Con 2 a wheel-shaped holder. Nintendo lists one light blue and one light red wheel in the set. The Joy-Con 2 controllers are not included, so this makes sense only if the recipient already has compatible controllers.
For travel, protection, and storage
Carrying Case & Screen Protector
Nintendo’s Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector includes a case, screen protector, and cleaning cloth. It does not include the console, controllers, or straps. It suits someone who carries the console in handheld mode and wants a dedicated way to protect it.

For someone who takes the whole TV setup between rooms or on trips, Nintendo’s All-In-One Carrying Case can hold the console, dock, Joy-Con 2 controllers, cables, and up to six game cards. The case does not include any of those components, so confirm that the recipient needs the larger capacity rather than a compact handheld case.
Choose microSD Express for game storage
If extra storage is the goal, look specifically for a microSD Express card. Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express expansion; conventional microSD cards used with the original Switch cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo lists a Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Switch 2 in its accessory catalog, but check current availability and capacity needs before choosing a card.

For a second TV setup or a needed replacement
Switch 2 Dock Set
A second dock can be useful for someone who regularly moves the console between TVs. Nintendo’s Dock Set includes a Switch 2 dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. The system already comes with one dock, so this is a convenience or replacement purchase, not a basic requirement.
Switch 2 AC Adapter
Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 AC Adapter as a replacement for the adapter included with the system; it can connect to the console or dock. It is a practical gift only if the recipient needs a spare or replacement.
Choose games with compatibility in mind
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch, but support is not universal: some older titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Some Switch games also have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2. Before gifting a game, verify the exact title and edition against Nintendo’s current Switch-to-Switch 2 compatibility guidance; do not assume that a title works perfectly simply because it ran on the original system.
Check original Switch accessories before reusing them
Owning original Switch accessories does not guarantee they will fit or work as expected with Switch 2. Nintendo’s console and accessory comparison and compatibility guidance establish these important differences:
- The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.
- Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but cannot attach to it. They need a Switch console or a compatible grip or charging stand to charge.
- Original Joy-Con straps, grips, Charging Grips, and wheels cannot be used with Joy-Con 2.
- An original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console, but cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode because the power output differs.
- Conventional microSD cards are not compatible for Switch 2 game-storage expansion; use microSD Express.
These distinctions can prevent a well-meant gift from being an incompatible duplicate. If the recipient’s exact game or accessory is uncertain, check the relevant Nintendo compatibility page before buying.
