The clue “Strumming right along…” points to stringed instruments. Parade describes the theme as instruments that are plucked or strummed; the answer list also includes VIOLIN, which is generally played with a bow.

Spangram
STRINGY is the spangram. It runs horizontally from the left edge to the right edge of the board. TechRadar reports that it starts at the left edge in the fifth row and ends at the right edge in the third row.

For first-letter nudges, Parade lists these prompts in answer order:
- GU
- BA
- MA
- UK
- VI
- HA
- SI
- ST (spangram)
Parade also notes that the first answer can be found in the top half of the board.

According to the New York Times instructions reproduced by Parade, players find theme words to fill the board; every three non-theme words found earn a hint. Theme answers highlight blue, while the spangram highlights yellow. Players can trace letters by dragging or tapping, and theme answers do not overlap. The spangram describes the theme and touches two opposite sides of the board; it may consist of two words. A hint reveals letters of a theme word.
