Chapter 5 has since been released as a free update. Toby Fox’s later outlook is about Chapter 6, which he expects in 2027.
What Toby Fox said about Chapter 5 in March 2026
In a March 19, 2026 report, Nintendo Life quoted Fox’s update on the work remaining before Chapter 5’s release. He said professional testers were familiarizing themselves with the game and would begin formal testing on April 1. Japanese translation quality assurance was projected to finish in April, and most of the development team had moved on from Chapter 5, with bugs and translation still to address. Nintendo Life reported those milestones.
Those dates described planned pre-release work, not the chapter’s current status. Fox also said testing had no fixed duration and that console approval and other release preparations would follow. The March update therefore did not promise a particular launch date.
Chapter 5 has since been released
Fox’s summer 2026 newsletter said Chapter 5 had come out about a month earlier. Nintendo describes it as a free update, and says subsequent chapters will also arrive as free updates. The old testing milestones are now historical; they should not be read as evidence that Chapter 5 is still awaiting release. See Nintendo’s listing for Deltarune and Fox’s official site for the game’s current official information.

What Fox’s later update says about Chapter 6
In the same summer newsletter, Fox described Chapter 6 as relatively short and focused on one part of the story. He said he expected it to release in 2027 and intended it to come out by itself, rather than alongside another chapter. That is a dated expectation, not a guaranteed release date. The Steam listing also points to 2027 for Chapter 6, while the official FAQ confirms the chapter is in development and that the game is not complete at Chapter 5.
Fox’s progress notes were specific but did not amount to a finished build: he had written additional sequences toward the chapter’s final third and rearranged rooms to support a new structure. Once those changes were connected, he expected to have a rough draft playable from beginning to end. If the chapter did not need major restructuring, he identified the boss and cutscene polish as the main work still ahead.

The Chapter 5 game update is free. The soundtrack is a separate release; the official FAQ lists Steam, Bandcamp, and iTunes as places to find it. The Materia Collective listing describes the Chapter 5 soundtrack as a 40-track, 60-minute album. That catalog detail applies to the album, not to the game’s development progress. Materia Collective’s listing has the soundtrack details.
