Fallout 4’s April 2024 next-gen update already included Performance and Quality modes, but it did not initially let players set a frame-rate target or independently choose whether to prioritize visuals or performance. Bethesda’s free Update 2, released May 13, added those controls on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: choose 30, 40, or 60 FPS, then select Visuals or Performance priority. The 40 FPS target requires a 120 Hz display.
What did the Fallout 4 next-gen update add?
The April 25, 2024 console update brought native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S applications, Performance and Quality modes, stability improvements, and fixes. Bethesda’s initial notes described Performance as a 60 FPS target at 4K with standard settings and dynamic resolution scaling. Quality targeted 30 FPS at 4K with ultra settings, or 40 FPS on a 120 Hz display. These are Bethesda’s stated targets, not independent measurements of how the game performs in every scene. Bethesda’s announcement and initial patch notes described the console changes.

Update 2 filled in a different kind of choice: instead of being limited to the original presets, players could select a frame-rate target and a visual priority. Bethesda said it made the controls in response to player feedback. The update was dated May 13, 2024; its listed versions were 1.10.765 on Xbox Series S|X and 1.10.985 on PS5. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes document the options.
Can you choose quality or performance mode in Fallout 4?
Yes. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Update 2 offers a separate Visuals/Performance priority choice alongside the frame-rate target. The controls are related, but they are not the same setting: one sets the target frame rate, while the other indicates whether the game should prioritize visual fidelity or performance. Bethesda notes that either priority may dynamically adjust internal resolution when a scene or action becomes more demanding.

To change the display settings, return to the game’s main menu. Bethesda says they can only be changed there, not from within a save in progress.
Does Fallout 4 have a 60 FPS mode on PS5?
Yes. Update 2 lists 60 FPS as the default frame-rate target on PS5 and Xbox Series S|X. Bethesda recommends choosing Performance priority when targeting 60 FPS. That describes the available target and recommended setting; the notes do not establish a measured, locked 60 FPS in every area or encounter.
Do you need a 120 Hz TV for Fallout 4 at 40 FPS?
Yes. Bethesda specifies that the 40 FPS target requires a display that supports 120 Hz. A 120 Hz display is not a general requirement for the free update or for selecting the 60 FPS target; it matters for the 40 FPS option.
Fallout 4 display choices at a glance
| Control | What Bethesda specifies | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 30 FPS target | Available in Update 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series S|X | Bethesda does not quantify its consistency in particular scenes. |
| 40 FPS target | Requires a 120 Hz-capable display | Use it only when the connected display supports 120 Hz. |
| 60 FPS target | Default in Update 2 | Bethesda recommends Performance priority for this target. |
| Visuals or Performance priority | A separate choice; either may dynamically adjust internal resolution in heavier scenes | It complements the frame-rate target rather than replacing it. |
Which platforms received the free update?
The next-gen application and the display options discussed above apply to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Bethesda said players must own Fallout 4 for the relevant next-gen console to download that console’s update. The same April announcement described different updates for older consoles and PC:
