For a reliable stealth archer in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, build around Marksman and Sneak, prioritize Agility, and plan for the fight to continue once enemies spot you. Sneak up for an opening bow shot, but don’t build around repeated sneak-attack bonuses: the available manual describes the bonus for the first attack made while undetected, with later attacks treated as regular attacks.
What skills and attributes should you choose?
Make Marksman and Sneak the foundation. Bethesda defines Marksman as the skill for bows and arrows, and Sneak as the ability to move unseen and unheard. Agility is the main attribute to prioritize: Bethesda describes its connection to ranged accuracy, while a June 2026 Remastered attributes reference also reports that it affects ranged damage and fatigue-related benefits.
Core skills
- Marksman: Your primary bow skill.
- Sneak: Helps you approach unseen and create an opening.
- Light Armor: A reasonable defensive choice for a stealth-focused character; Bethesda lists it among stealth skills.
- Alchemy or Illusion: Optional support paths. Bethesda identifies Alchemy with making potions and Illusion with effects including invisibility, but the sources here do not establish a particular poison recipe or spell progression.
These are priorities, not a proven best-in-slot custom class. The sources do not establish one superior race, birthsign, or exact class lineup, so choose those according to preference rather than assuming a specific combination is required.
Attributes and survivability
Prioritize Agility for the archer’s offensive and fatigue-related benefits, then use attribute increases to shore up survivability or support the skills you actually use. Endurance is one possible consideration: the cited Remastered attribute reference says it affects maximum health and recovery outside combat. No fixed allocation is established as best for every character.

How to make the opening shot count
The original Oblivion manual says a first Marksman or melee attack made while close enough and undetected deals considerably more damage; later attacks count as regular attacks. It does not give a Remastered-specific multiplier, so treat the first-shot advantage as foundational guidance, not a guaranteed damage figure or a repeatable bonus.
- Approach with Sneak and look for the stealth-eye indicator.
- Wait until the indicator is dull and translucent, which the manual describes as undetected. A bright, solid indicator means you have been detected.
- Take the bow shot while you still have the opening.
- If enemies detect you, reposition or use a backup combat plan instead of expecting every follow-up arrow to receive the opening-shot bonus.
Why Sneak skill is only part of stealth
The manual lists several factors that affect detection: lighting, whether you are moving or stationary, line of sight, boot weight, and invisibility effects. A high Sneak skill does not make those conditions irrelevant. When an approach fails, consider whether you were moving, visible, or in the enemy’s line of sight rather than assuming the skill is ineffective.
How to level without falling behind
Bethesda warns that enemies scale with character level and recommends improving a mix of combat, magic, and stealth skills. It also says skills rise through use, major skills raise character level faster, and sleeping after the bronze level-up indicator appears completes the character-level increase. That makes skill balance relevant: raising noncombat skills rapidly without developing fighting ability can leave combat feeling harder as enemies scale.
Each character level grants 12 Virtue Points. Bethesda says no more than five can be assigned to one attribute and no more than three attributes can be increased at that level. Spend with a purpose: keep Agility moving in line with your ranged focus, while considering health and the needs of any support skills you have chosen.

What to do when enemies spot you
A stealth archer needs a plan beyond the first arrow. Continue with the bow if that suits the encounter, reposition when possible, or use support skills you have invested in. Light Armor can contribute protection; Alchemy and Illusion are possible supplementary paths, but no particular armor set, poison, or spell is established here as the required choice.
There is no verified best bow or armor shortlist in the cited sources, nor a confirmed item route or level-scaling guide. Compare gear you find by whether it supports the opening shot, lets you keep fighting after detection, and provides protection without undermining the stealth approach you prefer. Treat claims that a particular item is definitively best as unverified unless supported by reliable, specific evidence.

Adjust combat difficulty if the build is not fun
Bethesda’s Update 1.2, dated July 16, 2025, added separate player- and enemy-damage settings with six choices: Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Journeyman, Expert, and Master. Adjust them if combat is too punishing or too easy; the update establishes the options, not a uniquely correct setting for stealth archers.
