Minecraft’s Poisonous Potato Update was a Java Edition April Fools snapshot released on April 1, 2024. Snapshot 24w14potato turned the poisonous potato into the centerpiece of a sprawling potato-themed dimension, with new biomes, items, blocks, mobs, and mechanics. Mojang also announced a separate Poisonous Potato add-on for Bedrock Edition; it is not the same release as the Java snapshot.
What is Minecraft’s Poisonous Potato Update?
24w14potato was a one-off joke snapshot, not a regular numbered update or permanent game drop. Its premise was to take an otherwise unremarkable poisonous potato and build an entire adventure around it. Mojang announced the snapshot on April 1, 2024, presenting the potato dimension and its features in the playful spirit of an April Fools release. Mojang’s announcement
That distinction matters: Minecraft’s ordinary free content releases are described as game drops on Mojang’s updates timeline. The Poisonous Potato snapshot was an April Fools experiment rather than a standard update to expect in the main game.
What was in the Poisonous Potato snapshot?
A dimension built around potatoes
The snapshot’s main setting was the Poisonous Potato Dimension, described by Mojang as the homeland of potato kind. Its five named biomes were Fields, Hash, Arboretum, Corruption, and Wasteland. The dimension also featured a Colosseum.

Potato-themed equipment, blocks, and creatures
Mojang’s announcement called out new blocks, potato-themed mobs and gadgets, a frying table, and added functionality for the fletching table. The snapshot’s fuller feature set also included portals, potato-themed ores and blocks, potato foods, a potato cutter, potato oil, and a boss encounter. Its floatato and floatater mechanics added further potato-based twists to exploration and movement. For a detailed catalogue of snapshot content, see the community-maintained 24w14potato reference.
These features belong to the joke snapshot: they should not be mistaken for a list of additions to Minecraft’s normal release. The snapshot’s exaggerated premise is part of what makes it different from a conventional expansion.

How to try 24w14potato in Java Edition
Mojang’s installation route is through the Minecraft Launcher. Because snapshots can corrupt worlds, use a backup or a separate game folder instead of risking a world you care about.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to the Installations tab.
- Enable snapshots in the launcher’s installation settings.
- Select snapshot 24w14potato and launch it.
- Use a backed-up world or a separate folder for snapshot play; do not open an important main-game world without a backup.
Mojang explicitly warns that snapshots may corrupt worlds and recommends backing up worlds or using a different folder from main worlds. Read Mojang’s snapshot guidance before launching.

Java snapshot, Bedrock add-on, or community mod?
There are distinct ways to encounter the Poisonous Potato concept, and they are not interchangeable. The original Java snapshot and the Bedrock add-on are separate releases; a later community mod is another unofficial route.
| Route | Edition or platform | Status and content | Compatibility or caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24w14potato | Java Edition | Mojang’s April Fools snapshot, released April 1, 2024, with the potato dimension and snapshot features. | Requires selecting the snapshot in the Launcher. Snapshots can corrupt worlds; back up or isolate them. |
| Poisonous Potato add-on | Bedrock Edition | A separate add-on associated with Jigarbov. Mojang described blocks, furniture, weapons, and armor. | It is not the Java snapshot, and identical content is not established. Current price and Marketplace availability are not established here. |
| Poisonous Potato Update mod | Java Edition | An unofficial Modrinth community mod that lists almost all content from 24w14potato. | The listing names Java 1.21 and 1.20.1–1.20.6, with Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge support. It documents differences, including a nonfunctioning Floatatar and changes to terrain generation and portal functionality; check the listing for current compatibility. |
The Bedrock details come from Mojang’s announcement. The mod’s stated versions and differences are from its Modrinth listing; mod support can change, so check that page before installing.

- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Is the Poisonous Potato Update still worth revisiting?
If you want the original April Fools experience, the Java snapshot is the direct route, with Mojang’s world-corruption warning in mind. Bedrock players should look for the separate add-on rather than expect to select 24w14potato. Players seeking to revisit much of the content in a later Java environment can consider the unofficial mod, but its supported versions and documented differences determine whether it suits their setup.
