The Sims 4 Life & Death Expansion Pack is at its best for players who want death to become the start of a story, not just a reason to replace a household member. Its ghosts, afterlife goals, active career progression and legacy tools give it several distinct play styles. That makes it an appealing supernatural and storytelling expansion, but not an obvious buy for anyone who has little interest in ghosts or life-spanning narratives.
What Life & Death is trying to make fun
The pack builds a full gameplay loop around mortality: Sims can make plans for their lives, pursue unfinished business after death, and leave a mark on the household they leave behind. Its story progression offers several possible outcomes rather than forcing every player down one path. Steam describes completing a Sim’s Bucket List as a point where players may choose for that Sim to be reborn, move on, or remain a ghost. Steam’s listing presents those as options in the pack’s story, not a required route.
That framing is the expansion’s strongest idea: death connects to goals, relationships, career play and family history instead of being only a sudden interruption. The feature mix is broad enough to support several kinds of storytelling, but its supernatural center is unmistakable.
Ghosts and the afterlife are the main attraction
Players who enjoy supernatural Sims get the clearest reason to buy. The expansion adds ghost gameplay and gives a deceased Sim things to do through Ghost Unfinished Business. Bucket Lists help make a Sim’s life feel like a narrative arc, while the choice of what happens after that arc leaves room for different stories. Ravenwood, the new world, is designed around that tone. EA describes it as having three neighborhoods, and the pack also includes the Hallowed Grounds lot trait. If a world with a distinct supernatural identity is part of the appeal, Ravenwood helps make the expansion feel like more than a collection of ghost interactions.
Is it still fun if you do not like playing with ghosts?
There are other hooks: two careers, a skill, aspiration, traits, wills and heirlooms all support different kinds of play. But the afterlife is the organizing idea tying the pack together. If you dislike ghost-focused stories and would rarely use its career or legacy systems, the central appeal may not land for you. A question like “Is there a reason why I should NOT get the Life & Death pack?” is best answered in terms of your play style: the strongest reason to pass is simply not wanting those systems in your saves.

Careers and Thanatology add a progression track
Life & Death introduces the Reaper Profession and Undertaker Career, alongside the Thanatology skill. EA Help states that Thanatology has five levels and is required to complete both careers. That requirement gives the skill a practical role in career progression rather than making it only a decorative addition. The pack also includes the Ghost Historian aspiration, plus Macabre, Chased by Death and Skeptic traits. EA lists these features in its official pack announcement; the skill and career requirement is documented in EA Help’s Life & Death guide.
This makes the expansion more than an afterlife sandbox for players who like structured goals and active career play. The Reaper and Undertaker paths give players concrete progression to pursue, although the pack’s broader identity still depends on whether death and the supernatural interest them.

Wills and heirlooms make death matter to a household
For legacy players, the expansion’s household systems may be its most useful features. EA Help documents the ability to create a Will and turn items into Heirloom Objects. Those tools let players connect one Sim’s life to what the next generation inherits, adding deliberate continuity to family or household storytelling. EA’s support guide explains these systems.
There is also a more immediate dramatic use for ghosts: EA’s death guide says that, in specified circumstances, a ghost Sim can talk with Grim and save a dying Sim from the brink. It is a conditional possibility rather than a general guarantee, but it gives ghost play a direct connection to the living household. See EA’s death guide for the circumstances.

EA’s launch announcement listed PC through the EA app, Mac through Origin, Epic Games Store and Steam, plus PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
