During Grow a Garden’s Smithing Event, players could get coal in three reported ways: contribute a plant, pet and gear at the event furnace, use a Smithing Dog, or dig for treasure. The event reportedly ran from November 15 to 22, 2025, and has ended; a return or current way to obtain coal has not been confirmed.
How players got coal during the Smithing Event
These methods are historical event instructions, not confirmed options in the current game. Beebom’s guide, updated November 15, 2025, described the furnace and Smithing Dog methods; the event wiki also records treasure digging as an event mechanic.

Contribute items at the event furnace
Beebom reported that players submitted a plant, a pet and a gear at the event furnace to receive coal of random rarity. The guide also said contributions affected crafting time and special weather. Those were reported event mechanics, not guarantees that the furnace or its rewards remain available. Read Beebom’s event guide.
Place a Smithing Dog on your farm
Beebom reported that players could craft the Smithing Dog at the event pet station and place it on their farm, where its passive dug up coal. The community wiki’s Common Coal page also lists the dog as a way to find Common Coal. Beebom gave a 12-minute interval, but that timing is secondary-source reporting rather than an officially confirmed rate; it should not be treated as a current or guaranteed schedule. See the Common Coal wiki page.

Dig for treasure
Beebom listed treasure digging as another event-era route, and the Smithing Event wiki documents digging as part of the event. The available sources do not establish a reliable current schedule or confirm that digging still awards coal. See the Smithing Event page.
What coal was used for
Common Coal was described by the community wiki as a limited gear added on November 15, 2025, for Smithing Event crafting. The event page lists rewards such as the Gem Egg, Smithing Dog and Anvil among examples of event crafts. Recipe details vary across reports, so verify a recipe in-game if the event returns rather than relying on quantities from an undated or inconsistent guide.
