Later, the guides point toward Gold Digger and level-50-plus choices such as Prismatic, Solstice, or Starfire. This is a guide-based route, not a mandatory order: choose for your control comfort, budget, and preferred perks. The recommendations below come from guides published in June and July 2025; current prices, stats, unlocks, and availability may have changed, so check the in-game item details before spending.
How to choose your next shovel
Do not judge a shovel by Strength alone. Guides for DIG identify Strength, Haste, Luck, and Control as useful comparison points, alongside price, passive effects, terrain compatibility, and whether the shovel is purchased or earned. The best upgrade is the one that fits both your current progression and how comfortably you handle the digging minigame.
- Strength: a key stat to compare when weighing digging performance.
- Haste: consider it alongside Strength rather than treating power as the only measure.
- Luck: relevant when a shovel or perk is associated with luck effects.
- Control: especially important if you want a more manageable minigame feel.
- Cost and acquisition: compare a shop purchase with a boss reward before spending.
- Terrain and passives: check any digging limitations and special effects listed for the item.
The progression guides do not establish a complete, current set of comparable prices and stats for every shovel. For that reason, the route below focuses on decision points rather than presenting uncertain values as a definitive tier list.
Early game: move on from Wooden when you are ready
Wooden Shovel
Wooden is the starter shovel and is suitable for getting through the tutorial. The guides place early options within roughly the first 15 levels, but those 2025 level bands should be treated as guide recommendations rather than a guarantee of current unlock requirements.

Toy Shovel or Training Shovel
The choice depends on your comfort with the digging minigame. Beebom suggests Toy for players who are already good at it, and Training for players who want more control. Pro Game Guides also places Toy and Training among the early upgrades. If control is the issue slowing you down, Training is the more natural choice; if you are comfortable with the minigame, consider Toy. Check each shovel’s current in-game stats and unlock details before buying.
At Cinder Shores: save toward Ruby
Beebom recommends saving for Ruby at Cindy’s shop in Cinder Shores. Pro Game Guides favors Ruby over Bell for power and control. That is a recommendation from those guides, not a universal rule for every player or build. Compare the currently displayed price and stats with what you can afford; do not spend on an intermediate shovel solely because it is available if Ruby is your intended next purchase.

Mid-game: compare Spore Spade with Candlelight
Spore Spade
Both Beebom and Pro Game Guides recommend Spore Spade and associate it with a Luck Totem perk. Beebom also describes it as able to dig both rock and dirt. Check the live item description for the perk and terrain behavior before relying on either detail, since the guides are from 2025.
Candlelight Shovel
The guides describe Candlelight as a boss reward from Candlelight Phantom, making it an alternative if you would rather conserve money than buy another shovel. Its value depends on the current boss reward and your ability to earn it; compare its live stats and effects with Spore Spade rather than assuming one is always superior.

Use quests and bosses as part of progression
Shovel upgrades are only one part of progressing in DIG. Pro Game Guides recommends keeping up with Combat Guild bounties and describes bosses as sources of rare loot and shovels, including Abyssal or Candlelight. It also points to Tom’s Bakery quests for a unique shovel and temporary pastry buffs. These activities can support character resources as you work toward purchases, but confirm current rewards and quest details in-game.
Later game: consider Gold Digger, then compare endgame options
Gold Digger
Beebom and Pro Game Guides recommend Gold Digger over spending on some intermediate alternatives, associating it with a Golden mutation and improved earnings. Treat the earnings benefit as a guide-described perk, and check the current item description and price before committing.

Prismatic, Solstice, and Starfire
Pro Game Guides identifies Prismatic, Solstice, and Starfire among options for level 50 and above. The guides do not agree on a single definitive ranking, so use the current in-game requirements, stats, passives, and prices to decide which suits your build. Do not treat level 50 as a verified current unlock threshold without checking the game.
