In a standard Dead Rails bank, defeat the nearby Banker Zombie and collect the Bank Note or Bank Combo it drops. Use the digits on that note at the vault’s combination wheel. If the code does not work at the first vault you try, it may belong to another nearby bank.
Get the code from a Banker Zombie
- Find a bank. While exploring a town, look for the bank and watch for nearby enemies. A Banker Zombie is described as wearing a black top hat.
- Defeat the Banker Zombie. Pick up the Bank Note, also called a Bank Combo, that it drops. The note carries the vault code, so keep it with you or record the digits.
- Go to the vault. At the combination wheel, use its handles to align the displayed numbers with the code on your note, then try the vault.
Pro Game Guides contributor Praharsh Kashyap described the drop this way: “Once you kill this special enemy, it’ll drop a note, i.e., the bank combo.” The walkthrough was updated February 14, 2025, so game mechanics may have changed since then: Pro Game Guides’ Dead Rails bank walkthrough.
If the code does not open the vault
Check whether the note and vault belong together. Community wiki guidance says larger towns can have multiple banks and nearby Banker Zombies, with codes associated with particular vaults. Try matching the note to another bank rather than assuming the code is universal. This is a possibility, not a guaranteed rule.
Sterling uses a separate note puzzle
Sterling is described as a different route: collect five pieces found around Sterling and the mines to assemble a Ripped Bank Note, which then works like a normal Bank Note. Community pages also distinguish Sterling’s separated digits from an ordinary note. These details come from community-maintained wiki material and are not documented by the official Roblox listing; exact piece locations are not established here.

Community wiki pages describe explosives such as dynamite, a gunpowder barrel, or fireworks as an in-game way to open a vault. Treat this only as a fallback: the blast may destroy valuables or hurt your character if you are too close. A Dynamite Zombie is also described as a possible source of an explosion, but that approach carries the same kind of risk. These community-reported mechanics have not been independently verified in gameplay.

The basic Banker Zombie → Bank Note/Bank Combo → vault procedure is described by multiple secondary sources. The official Dead Rails Roblox listing identifies the experience as a Roblox game by Gangster Studios, but does not explain the vault mechanic. The available sources do not establish current spawn guarantees, loot amounts, code reset behavior, or mobile-specific wheel controls.
