Before enabling cheats in Bedrock, note that doing so permanently prevents achievements from being unlocked in that world—even if you turn cheats off afterward.
Enable cheats in a Bedrock singleplayer world
- From the world list, select the edit option for the world you want to change.
- Open the world’s Game settings and turn on Allow Cheats.
- Load the world, open chat, and enter a command beginning with
/.
Minecraft’s official commands guide says enabling cheats permanently stops players from unlocking achievements in that world, even if cheats are later turned off. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable before changing the setting.
Enable commands in a Java singleplayer world
When creating a world
Turn on Allow Commands during world creation. Once the world loads, open chat and enter a command with a leading /.
For an existing world
- Open the world’s World Options.
- Enable Allow Commands.
- Return to the world, open chat, and type a slash command.
The setting is called Allow Commands in Java; Bedrock uses Allow Cheats.

Allow commands for other players
Java: Open to LAN
In a Java singleplayer world, open the game menu, choose Open to LAN, and configure Allow Commands for players joining that session.
Multiplayer servers
On a server, command access depends on player permissions, not just on whether commands or cheats are enabled for the world. If you cannot run a command, ask the server owner or administrator to grant the required access.

Bedrock worlds and dedicated servers
In Bedrock, enabling cheats and granting an individual player command permission are separate considerations. Microsoft’s commands introduction notes that a player may need Operator Commands permission to run commands in chat and access command blocks.
For a Bedrock Dedicated Server, the owner can set allow-cheats in server.properties. Microsoft’s server properties documentation lists the default as false; setting it to true allows cheat commands. Players may still need appropriate permissions.

Enter a command
Open chat, type / followed by the command, and submit it. Enabling the world setting does not necessarily give every player on a shared world or server permission to use commands.
Which setting should you use?

Exact menu placement can vary by platform and game version. If a label or screen differs, check the settings for the specific world and edition you are playing.
