What is the best Nintendo 3DS screen protector?
Choose a model-specific, officially licensed protector that covers both screens if you want to protect the upper and lower displays. Nintendo’s guidance is particularly relevant to the upper screen: “Licensed screen protectors may be used on the 3D screen.” It also warns that unlicensed protectors may negatively affect proper 3D image display. Nintendo Support explains its screen-protector guidance.
There is not enough comparative testing here to name a universally best material or claim that glass outperforms film. Instead, judge a product by fit, whether it includes films for both screens, licensing, and whether it comes with useful application tools. The manufacturer examples below illustrate model-specific products; they are not confirmation of current stock.

How do you make sure a protector fits your 3DS?
- Read the full model name on your console and the protector packaging. Match the named version, not just the Nintendo 3DS family. Original 3DS, 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS XL should not be treated as interchangeable unless the product explicitly lists your model.
- Check both screens. Confirm that the package includes a protector for the upper screen and the lower touchscreen if you want coverage for both.
- Check licensing. For a protector used on the 3D screen, prefer one identified as officially licensed; Nintendo’s warning concerns possible effects on 3D image display from unlicensed protectors.
- Check the listing’s condition and seller details. Older products may be discontinued, and a historical manufacturer page does not confirm present availability, seller, price, or listing condition.
For a New Nintendo 3DS XL
Buy only a protector whose packaging explicitly names New Nintendo 3DS XL. The cited HORI 3DS-431 page names New Nintendo 3DS LL; that documentation does not establish that it fits a New Nintendo 3DS XL sold under a different regional name. Verify the exact model on the package or with the maker before purchasing.
Will a screen protector affect 3D?
Nintendo says licensed screen protectors may be used on the 3D screen, while unlicensed protectors may negatively affect proper 3D image display. The support guidance does not provide a product-by-product test or a quantified effect, so it does not establish that every licensed protector performs identically. Check the specific product’s licensing and model compatibility rather than relying on a generic “3DS” description.

Can a new protector fix a scratched 3DS screen?
No. A protector is preventive; it does not repair scratches, scuffs, marks, or damage already on the display. Nintendo’s troubleshooting page covers screens with scratches or residue left by a protector and says service may be required if the issue remains. Its support information lists the original Nintendo 3DS, original 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, and New Nintendo 3DS XL among models it no longer services in that support region. Check your local Nintendo support channel for current options. Nintendo’s screen-scratch support page has the regional guidance.
