For most players deciding what to spend them on, the practical starting point is to unlock the four minigames; after that, the Cookie Clicker Wiki’s suggested route prioritizes a larger Garden and Stock Market upgrades. Treat that route as a reference, not a universal best build: your goals and play style matter.
What Sugar Lumps do
Sugar Lumps are a resource for building levels. Reaching level 1 in certain buildings unlocks the minigame associated with that building, while further levels can improve aspects of the minigame. Some minigames also let you spend a lump to refill a resource or reset a timer. The exact effect depends on the building and game version. The Cookie Clicker Wiki’s Minigames page describes these mechanics; it is community documentation, not official developer documentation.
Which buildings unlock the four minigames?
One lump takes each associated building to level 1 and unlocks its minigame.

The building-to-minigame associations are listed in the Minigames reference. Garden size and level details are described on the Wiki’s Garden page, which identifies its mechanics as version 2.052. The cited pages do not establish that every mechanic is identical across all current platforms or builds.

How should you spend Sugar Lumps?
The Cookie Clicker Wiki FAQ gives a specific progression, but it is a community strategy rather than an objectively optimal route for every save. It recommends unlocking all four minigames first, then expanding the Garden, improving Stock Market capacity, and saving for a heavenly upgrade.
- Unlock the four minigames. Spend one lump each to bring Wizard Towers, Temples, Farms, and Banks to level 1. The FAQ’s listed order is Wizard Tower/Grimoire, Temple/Pantheon, Farm/Garden, then Bank/Stock Market.
- Raise Farms to level 9. The FAQ recommends 44 additional lumps for this step, which gives the Garden its maximum 6×6 size according to the Wiki’s Garden mechanics page.
- Level Cursors toward level 12. The FAQ recommends this to increase Stock Market office capacity and reach loans. The Stock Market uses seconds of production as its currency, and prices are mostly random, though some dynamics are predictable.
- Save 100 lumps for Sugar Baking. This is the next saving target in the FAQ’s sequence: the Sugar Baking heavenly upgrade.
Choose differently if your immediate goal is more important than following that sequence. For example, early access to a particular minigame, an achievement, or active Grimoire combo play may make its associated building a higher priority. The FAQ’s numbers describe its recommendation, not a requirement imposed on every player.

What does spending a lump do inside each minigame?
Garden: more plots from Farm levels
The Garden unlocks when a Farm reaches level 1. Additional Farm levels enlarge the plot, reaching 6×6 at level 9 according to the Wiki page describing mechanics as of v2.052. Use the larger plot if Garden space is central to your plans; the FAQ’s route assigns 44 lumps beyond the initial unlock to reach that level.
Grimoire: magic pool and refills
Wizard Towers unlock the Grimoire at level 1. The Minigames page says a Sugar Lump can refill magic, up to 100 units; Wizard Tower count and level affect the magic pool. Treat that 100-unit figure as the Wiki’s stated maximum refill, not a guarantee that every player’s pool will refill by that amount. If you rely on spells or combos, consider whether a lump is more valuable as a refill than toward another building level.

Pantheon: worship swaps
A Temple at level 1 unlocks the Pantheon. Further lump spending is associated with worship-swap refill mechanics. The available references do not establish current-version timer details, so check the in-game description before committing a lump based on a timer or reset expectation.
Stock Market: offices and loans
A Bank at level 1 unlocks the Stock Market, but Cursor levels expand its office capacity. The market measures its currency in seconds of production; prices are mostly random, with some predictable dynamics. The FAQ’s Cursor-level advice is aimed at capacity and loans, not a promise of predictable profits.

What carries over when you ascend?
Ascension removes crops currently planted in the Garden, but unlocked seed types remain unlocked. After ascending, you need at least one Farm again to access the Garden. The Wiki’s Garden page describes these persistence rules alongside mechanics labeled v2.052; it does not establish platform-specific details for every current build.
- Harvest crops you care about before ascending, and complete crop-related goals that depend on the active Garden first.
- Do not treat unlocked seeds as lost: seed collection persists through ascension according to the Wiki.
- Plan to own a Farm again after ascending if you want to reopen the Garden.
Advanced lump options: Garden sacrifice and Sugar Frenzy
Two options are aimed at players further along than the initial minigame unlocks. The Sugar Lumps page describes the Garden sacrifice route as a way to gain 10 lumps after obtaining every seed; it also describes Sugar Frenzy as a one-hour, triple-CpS effect that costs one lump once its heavenly upgrade has been purchased. These are not part of the early unlock sequence. Check the current in-game unlock and reset conditions before pursuing either, particularly if you are weighing a Garden sacrifice against progress you want to retain.
