Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have had a limited-time Max Raid event featuring Shiny Zeraora, while Pokémon GO has offered event-specific boosted shiny chances for some Dynamax Battle Pokémon. Neither example establishes a universal shiny rate or means every raid boss can be shiny.
What “Dynamax raids” means
The phrase can refer to two different modes. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, players battle Dynamax Pokémon in dens through Max Raid Battles. In Pokémon GO, Dynamax encounters are called Max Battles and take place at Power Spots. Shiny eligibility and event rules are specific to each game, so an example from one mode does not establish what can happen in the other.
Can a Max Raid boss be shiny in Sword and Shield?
Yes. The clearest official example is the Shiny Zeraora event, which ran from June 17 through June 28, 2020. The Pokémon Company International said that “in five-star Max Raid Battles, there’s a chance that an especially powerful Shiny Zeraora will appear!” The event announcement is evidence for that particular Pokémon and event—not a general statement about the odds or eligibility of ordinary Max Raid bosses.
The event also had a separate reward condition: if at least one million Trainers defeated Zeraora, a Shiny Zeraora would be distributed through Pokémon HOME. Players could not throw a Poké Ball at Zeraora during the event, so the HOME reward was not a catch from the raid. The event is historical and does not indicate that Shiny Zeraora is currently available through Max Raids.

How ordinary Max Raid catches work
In the game’s standard Max Raid instructions, players battle Dynamax Pokémon found in dens, alone or with other players locally or online. After defeating the Pokémon, each participant gets one Poké Ball attempt to catch it. The official Max Raid guide and Dynamax and catch guidance describe those mechanics; they do not provide a general shiny rate for ordinary dens.
Can Dynamax Pokémon be shiny in Pokémon GO?
They can be, when the Pokémon is eligible and the relevant encounter or event allows it. Pokémon GO’s Help Center lists Raid Boss encounters among the ways a player may encounter a Shiny Pokémon, and notes that not every Pokémon has a shiny variant available. The Shiny Pokémon help page is general guidance; it does not say that every Max Battle boss is shiny-eligible.

For a Dynamax-specific example, the official Pokémon GO Fest 2025: Max Finale announcement advertised an increased chance of encountering Shiny Dynamax Pokémon typically found in one- through four-star Dynamax Battles. That boost applied to the event described, not automatically to later events or all Power Spot bosses. Pokémon GO calls these encounters Max Battles rather than Max Raid Battles.

The official sources cited here do not give a universal percentage or “one in N” rate for ordinary Sword and Shield Max Raid Battles or Pokémon GO Max Battles. The Zeraora announcement says there was a chance but gives no number; the 2025 Pokémon GO event says “increased chance” without publishing a rate. Those statements cannot be used to calculate baseline odds or compare the two games.

For a specific Pokémon, check the current official event announcement or availability notice for that game and date. Confirm the exact species and mode, and look for whether the notice says the shiny is available or that its chance is boosted. Do not assume that an event bonus applies outside its stated window, or transfer an odds figure from a different mode such as Dynamax Adventures to den raids or GO Max Battles.
