Roblox offers text chat inside supported experiences and separate ways to chat with friends, but what you can use depends on your age, completed age check, account and parental settings, region, and the experience itself. Voice chat has separate eligibility rules.
What kinds of chat does Roblox offer?
Roblox chat is not one universal feature. The option you see depends on whether you want to talk to people in the same game, message a friend outside a game, or speak aloud.

How do you use chat in a Roblox experience?
- Join an experience that supports chat. If its developer has not enabled the chat window, the in-experience chat option will not appear.
- Press / on a keyboard, or tap the chat icon on a supported device, to open the chat window.
- If chat is unavailable, check Settings → Privacy & content restrictions → Communication → Experience chat. Menu labels can change, and options may differ by region.
Roblox’s current chat guide says users must successfully complete an age check to use Experience chat, Voice chat, and Friends communication features.
Can you message a Roblox friend outside a game?
Yes, if the friend-chat option is available to your account. Look in the current Chat or Party area to open an existing conversation or start one; the tab name and available options can vary by region and account eligibility. Roblox says users under 9 cannot send direct messages or chat with friends outside games. Older users may have additional text or group-chat options, subject to age, settings, and regional availability.

How do age and parental settings affect chat?
Roblox’s current rules make age checks and permissions part of access. Users aged 5–9 need parental consent to turn on Experience chat, and users under 16 need parental consent to turn on Direct chat. Check the account’s current communication settings because availability can vary by region and feature. Roblox explains age-check requirements in its age-check guide.

A parent with linked privileges can manage a child’s Experience chat through Parental Controls. Roblox’s Parental Controls Overview covers game chat, game direct chat, and friends chat. Those controls do not apply to communication features that developers build independently, so a Roblox parental setting may not govern every chat feature inside every experience.
How does Roblox voice chat work?
Voice chat is separate from text chat and is available only to eligible users aged 13 or older who have completed an age check, in supported regions and experiences. It is not on by default. In an experience that supports it, use the headphone icon or the in-experience settings to connect or disconnect voice. Roblox lists the current requirements in its Voice Chat instructions.

What safety controls are available?
Roblox says filtered chat is the default for eligible communication. Its safety guidance says posts and chats from users aged 12 and younger are filtered for inappropriate content and personal information. You can block or mute someone who makes you uncomfortable, and report messages that violate Roblox rules from within a conversation. See Roblox’s chat, privacy, and filtering guidance for details.

Why can’t you see or use chat?
- The experience may not support it: Experience chat only appears when the developer has enabled the chat window.
- Your account may need an age check or permission: Check the communication settings and any parental-consent requirements that apply to your age.
- You may be looking for a different feature: Friend chat is separate from in-experience chat, and voice has additional eligibility rules.
- Regional availability may differ: Roblox says chat features and settings can vary by region; the name of the friends-chat tab is also rolling out regionally.
